TheKing - More On The Esteban Guitar Fraud

So-called ?Guitar legend? Esteban was stripped of his legendary status this week when it was discovered that he is an entirely fictional character created specifically to sell pressboard guitars in infomercials.

Allan Holdsworth, guitar legend and president of ?Real Guitar Legends For Truth? released a statement on Monday calling for the immediate cessation of all applications of the appellation ?Guitar legend? to the television character known as ?Esteban?. According to the statement, ?Esteban is a fictional character created by L.A. session guitarist Dan Fernaueu for the express purpose of marketing a cheap, poorly constructed guitar-like instrument on the Home Shopping Channel.?

The scandal intensified when the Recording Academy revealed that claims that ?Esteban? had won ?several Grammys? were false.

These charges come on the heels of last month?s statement from the Musical Instrument Manufacturers Association that the ?Esteban? guitar could not, in fact, be classified as an actual guitar due to the fact that it is constructed out of reclaimed materials such as discarded telephone directories and medical waste. The MIMA demanded that the instrument be classified as a toy.

If you can't trust one-named characters from infomercials on The Shopping Channel, who can you trust??

Well...I received my guitar three or four days ago. It gives every appearance of being well constructed...I guess time will be the test of that. It has a good tone to it (not a really great tone but a good tone)...but a better set of strings will improve the tone. The amp and controls on it and the controls on the guitar are satisfactory. The strings are not high up off the neck. All and all I am very satisfied with it initially. If it holds up over time...it will have been a good buy. I am currently only playing about 15 to thirty minutes per day as I do not want to really tear my fingers up while building up calluses.

A toy it is not...it is a good beginners guitar...providing it holds up...which it may not. BTW...I suspect...that it may be the guitar "Esteban" is actually playing on the commercial...and not a more expensive one...as the tone sounds about the same.

theking 09-25-2004 11:29 PM

Well...just put in another thirty minutes. It is amazing what I have forgotten about playing a guitar...but it also may be amazing what I remember...as it has been so long since I have played.

You may drive around in your town
Ina brand new shiny car
Your face in the wind your haircut's in
And your friends think you're bizarre
you may find a cushy job and I hope that you go far
But if you really want to taste some cool success
You better learn to play guitar

Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar

You got your eye on the cheerleader queen
you're walkin' her home from school
You know that she's only seventeen
She's gonna make you a fool
You know you can't touch this stuff
Without money or a brand new car
Let me give you some good advice young man
You better learn to play guitar

Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar

All women around the world want a phony rock star
Who plays guitar
You can pump your iron and shine your shoes
And wear your hair just right
You go down out on cruisin' street
'Cause you want to score tonight
Ra da ra da ra da
And you really want to show your scars
Forget all about that macho shit
And learn how to play guitar

Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar
Play guitar--play guitar

Honeyslut 09-25-2004 11:57 PM

That's good. I'm glad you are happy. I'm sure much of the article above was tongue-in-cheek, especially about the guitar's construction. If you continue to play and decide to upgrade your acoustic in the future, I'd recommend a Martin or Taylor.

BTW - I was looking at Esteban's music site and it appears he usually plays a nylon string, classical style guitar.

Well...I will have to watch the commercial again to see if he is actually playing the guitar he is selling...but on the video that comes with the guitar...it appears and sounds as if he is playing the guitar that is sold.

What is the link to Esteban's music site?

I've seen guitars made out of some fucked up shit. It's OK.

I knew that guy was a fake, but whoever was playing had talent.

It'd probably be a pretty decent deal, you get the guitar and instructional material for a fair price. It's not supposed to be a great guitar, it's cheap. You don't learn on a $2000 Martin.

they have SpyWare inside the guitar, Everytime you try to play it you will want to stop and go buy more stuff from the Home Shopping Channel.
and you can't get rid of it. they say they learned that trick from the porn slingers on the internet. my cousin works their he knows.
