1.2 Billion People Live on $1 Per Day

Just the facts . . . and quite sobering numbers.

Of the 6.4 billion people in today's world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day.

Thirty-five million Americans, including 13.1 million children-live in food insecure households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger. This represents approximately 12.5 percent of the US population.

842 million people in the world are malnourished-798 million of them are from the developing world. More than 153 million of them are under the age of 5.

6 million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger.

In developing countries, 90 children out of 1,000 die before their fifth birthday. By comparison, in the United States eight children in 1,000 will die before turning five years old.

2.4 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation.

1.1 billion cannot reach safe drinking water. 1.6 million people die per year due to unsanitary conditions in their water sources.

By the end of 2000, some 22 million people had died from AIDS, which has caused 13 million children to lose either their mother or both parents.

Only 400,000 of the 6 million people in need of HIV/AIDS treatment are getting it. Every year three million people die from HIV/AIDS because they cannot access medical aid.

wow.

It's pretty obvious you weren't born into money. I wish most wealthy people cared that much. :thumbsup

ThunderBalls 09-22-2004 10:46 PM

Cost of the Iraq war up to this point: $136,457,350,584
Enough to fully fund global anti-hunger efforts for
5 years.

It may be enough money, but would the plan work. That's the question. And it's easier to just go to war instead of feed the world.

hydro 09-22-2004 10:48 PM

it sucks that we live in a world where so many people suffer :(

Odin88 09-22-2004 10:48 PM

Quite obviously a lot of people in this world live very badly, but that figure is a poor judge of this. $1 per day in some countries is enough to eat, drink, go to school and so on, whereas in every Western nations you could not afford even 1 very small meal daily. Of course this is not to say that billions of people don't live in poverty, just that using such figures is silly.

Groove 09-22-2004 10:49 PM

A VERY LARGE amount of this poverty would be eliminated if the
US and EU removed agricultural subsidies and trade barriers. :2 cents:

Bill Gates was born into money and he still cares enough to donate billions.

Sadly, I grew up in one of the wealthiest areas of the country and went to private schools, and all that other bullshit, and throughout my early years I profoundly detested the arrogance and lack of genuine compassion for people, that I saw and experienced in those old money Philadelphia Main Line snobs.

Joe Citizen 09-22-2004 10:51 PM

Why aren't they paying their fair share of tax?!

Ease the tax burden on the wealthy and level the playing field!

These so called 'people living in poverty' aren't contributing their fair share!

NikkiNevada 09-22-2004 10:51 PM

Hey Nikki, does anyone in School recognize you from your site?? Kinda like the movie "Girl Next Door" :)

polish_aristocrat 09-23-2004 01:26 AM

And then you wonder people come in this biz and are satisfied with $250 per month.

freeadultcontent 09-23-2004 01:35 AM

And I wonder why most people do not know who Dr. Norman Borlaug is.

Edit. I sure hope he has a world wide holiday soon.

Not sure what yuo mean by this, but even $250 a month in most Western nations (particularly in Western Europe) alone wouldn't get you accomodation, food and water.

Also cluck, not a 'nazi' (point has been bought up many times before though) though my Grandfather was ;).

Yep, and I bet it would do far more against the war on terror. People with full bellies usually aren't as quick to aggression.

What country????

After 25 years as an expat in Asia and Africa I can garanty you that 1$/ day.....is not enought to feed anybody anywhere in the world.....

MajorTom

SR 09-23-2004 07:09 AM

Instead of sending food they should ship rubbers.
Alot of countries are very over populated and sending them food won't do shit.
Why have 6 children who will most likely die young or have a bad life if you can't even feed yourself?

They constantly promote their dollar a day program in which you alone sponsor one child to send to school, get clean water and some basic essentials to setup their own 'farm' as such (seeds, etc).

Peaches 09-23-2004 07:14 AM

Birth control

It's amazing to read some of the stories of people starving in other countries who have 5-10 kids.

I also have a hard time believing with all the free food school programs, food stamps, WIC, food pantries and welfare there are children in the US who are legitimately going hungry.

Perfect logic.

How many billion did Bush sign towards the Virgin-class submarine, 3% pay increase for military, and upgrading the armour on Hummers? In the 100s of billions?

Matt

Daft 09-23-2004 07:19 AM

This may sound insensitive, but most of the dying children in the world is the fault of the parents. Why if you are already poor and can barely support yourself bring a child into the world? Are people just that stupid and bored and have nothing better to do than to just fuck and have kids?

Yes - Do you want to go there and educate people of birth control methods and also distribute birth control?

Not insensitive, ignorant.

The problem is Peaches, they don't look at it like that. To the parents they already know most of there kids won't make it, so they figure the best strategy is to pump kids out like crazy and hope a few survive.

Goatse 09-23-2004 02:18 PM

The so-celled problem is entirely racial; it obviously stems from genetic differences between races. Of course, most GFYers would rather live in their Pollyanesque world of equality than to face the harsh scientific realities that explain why some tribes live perfectly peaceful, abundant lives while others live in misery like thousands of their ancestors.

Nice to see a post that is more relevant than a load of the bullshit that seems to preoccupy us :thumbsup

Within an hour or so of flying time of the US, there are mothers "selling" their kids on the streets for food today.

It ain't thru some "loving" desire to pimp their kids or "low moral standards" - it's because the whole family will die.

And.. before I hear crap about them being lazy or "not wanting to help themselves" - this ain't the case. There is *no* help, no medical assistance, no work, no food to be scraped up off the land.

Tho they do have a load of fucking tourist pedos flashing dollar bills at them....

zentz 09-23-2004 03:08 PM

Sadly no.. not kidding. This is "real life" with quite a few people.

I got a project that is being worked on at the moment in conjunction with child protection agencies in some countries where this is real life. I've seen it first hand and spoken with the kids - they are starving to death - and the parents are little better off and have absolutely nada hope.

When ya got an eight year old girl trying to tell ya she can't sleep at night cos her stomach hurts - ya begin to get a clue.

There are some good guys spending their time trying to get them aid and have been doing this for years now.

I wanna blow this fucking lot up and we have a documentary project in the pipleline which I hope will have at least *some* impact on the "western world", - that is, unless they care to look away and forget them for another 10 years.

In between all that shit, the child protection agencies waste time chasing a load of damned pedos who skip borders from time to time. It's a fucking sad joke..

I don't give a shit who these people are - they are all "people" - the same as you and I. It's just they are not quite as fortunate.
