Yet another computer question

Maybe it's just me. You go out and buy a new computer, bring it home, and it is a dream, runs as sweet as pie. For the next year or so, you can add any hardware or software you like, and everything is peachy. Then comes doomsday, a major crash, and you have to reformat and reinstall everything. It seems at this point some little demonic gremlin takes over, and you can throw plug and play out the window, and any new software you install needs the patience of a saint to install. All of a sudden some programs that worked like a charm, start freezing your computer, and you get fatal errors out the ying yang. For some unknown reason, your mouse, keyboard, and or cd rom just say fuck it, I'm on vacation. Is it just me? This is the 3rd computer in the past 5 years that has played this little mystery game on me.

That's why I build my computers. I load it only with an operating system (windows 2K pro) Internet tools, (browsers, html editors) and graphics software (photoshop6, 3D studio max...) and that's it.

I tend to agree with RedShoe on this one. A computer is a tool, a tool I personally use to bring income into my home. Surfing the net and installing all the latest and greatest cool little tools will lead you to trouble in the end. It is a well-known and documented fact that many of the programs that you are installing from websites contain entries to your registry and tcp/ip connections that allow companies to monitor your usage. This allows them to use this information to better market products online, and if they fail they can sell this information to the millions of companies looking to get a stranglehold on how to market on the television of the new milleninum.

My suggestion is to keep your box clean. If you have not been doing this since the beginning of time, you may not know how to build your own machines. While I find it is preferable to build my own machine, you can still control what is loaded on your system. If you must have a computer to surf with, do what Elsibeth and I do. We have five systems on the net at this time (not including servers that are co-located at our ISP), three we use for business and two that are toss aways that we use to surf with.

I agree. We have our machines built, using very compatible hardware...from the mother board on up. If you want to email me, I'll tell you what hardware we use...rather than plaster it all over the board....and, where our computers come from.
They may not be the biggest baddest out there, but they run.....and fairly smoothly.
No games go on these computers. My working machine is kept to a bare minimum....only what I absolutely need for my work.
We run NT, which is a fairly stable OS......mainly 'cause we have two engineers here...who know NT.....

There's nothing worse than having your system crash...you have my sympathy.
