Your fave 'underrated' actor/actress?
 

Do you have a few actors or actresses that you usually enjoy watching but aren't hyped to death like Pitt, Crowe, Hanks, Roberts, etc


I will leave Depp on the shelf because he isn't underrated anymore, though he used to be.


A few I can think of that I always enjoy but usually seem to be just on the edge of the success they deserve:

John Cuzak (I know that is a borderline one)
James Spader
Jim Broadbent
Robert Carlyle
Jonny Lee Miller
Paul Bettany
Shirely Henderson (US folk might know her from playing Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter but she is more than that)

Jennifer Love Hewitt, she just isn't getting any good movie roles anymore :( Shes only 25 too.

I think Gary Sinise is a great actor! Not too much hype about him usually...

Jeanine Garofalo isn't an amazing actress, but she's fun to watch and makes the movie better.

Yeah, he had a little blip in popularity with Apollo 13 and Gump but haven't heard much from him since.

John Cusack has been one of my favorite actors since Better Off Dead.

First time I remember him is 16 Candles as one of the geeks. I guess I was a geek groupie even back then because I have followed him since. He does a lot of underrated movies too. Joan was in 16 Candles too.

Robin Wright Penn

I loved her in Santa Barbara (yes I used to watch that everyday!!), loved her in Forrest Gump, and in some other roles too. Not everything, she doesn't always seem to pick the best movies.

I love Edward Norton and Steve Bushemi (sp?)

All character actors are underrated. John de Lancie is underrated and he was great as Eugene on "Days of Our Lives" before playing Q on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He was recently on SF Channel's "Darklight". Gabby Hayes was underrated too and I think he stole every scene he was in.

Oh I remember him as the geek in 16 candles, but he wasn't the focus of that flick....I don't think you really saw the glimmer of greatness he showed until Sure Thing came out...and then Better Off Dead.

Great movie, great actor.

You didnt see The Stand mini series? Also plays the bad guy in Ransom with Mel Gibson. Done MANY movies. Also staring in The Forgotten opening this week. And also plays the lead in the new series CSI:New York.

I'd fuck the shit out of her. Don't ask me why. I've been trying to figure this out since 1990.

I think that and Albino Aliigator are 2 great movies for him...

He has done many movies, but many people still say" That guys good.. whats his name?"

Sarah... You are 100% correct... he is underrated and has done many underrated movies!

I think High Fidelity and Serendipity really broke new ground for him though. He is now being taken much more seriously! He is being looked at in a higher light than just an 80's actor trying to make a comeback!

true...it was pretty clear in Say Anything aswell that he was something special.

High Fidelity is one of my faveorite books and movies (though they are different enough to be seperate things). I think I enjoy them so much because the characters in it are 'my people'. Especially the book which is set in London. To be honest his character in High Fidelity is just how I like my geeks..music geeks..mmmm

I first had a hard-on for her when I saw her on AE's Evening At tThe Improv when she was doing stand-up.

When I was married and Cats and Dogs came on TV my wife asked me if I though which girl( Janeane Garofalo or Uma Thurman ) I thought was prettier. Of course I said NEITHER( I'm not THAT stupid ) anyways she pressed and I said Garofalo( which was the truth ) and she look at me like I was from Mars. Boy she told EVERYONE I was "in love" her and whenever she was on TV she'd say "there's your girlfriend" then make a barfing noise.

Sean Penn was fantastic in his younger days. Now he tends to overact a little bit.

Edward Norton and Kevin Spacey both deserve a hell of a lot more credit that they receive, IMHO. :2 cents:

But the king of underrated actors to me is Michael Rappaport.

too many to mention but i will say if Michael Parks doesn't get an oscar nomination for playing Esteban Vihaio in Kill Bill 2, then I will be a very sad mowse.

yup, a few times but have been a fan since Pretty In Pink (another John Hughes find, I note)

Spacey gets a ton of attention over here. He has moved here now and is running one of the famous theaters.

I think Owen Wilson is underrated. His voice may get annoying at times, but I usually enjoy most movies he's in.

I'd have to agree. I remember seeing her in the village in nyc as a teenager.

Are you guys serious that you consider Ed Norton underrated? I thought he's been given his props since People vs Larry Flynt.

Aren't they both lined up for 'Porno', thought I'm not sure that's still happening.

that would make sense since I know some of his previous characters from trainspotting show up in Porno too so Carlyle could very well be in it. He was in Plunkett & Macleane with Miller (an underrated movie) and the worked well together.

Also, a few months ago he was in a BBC mini series called "Gunpowder, Treason and Plot" where he played King James. Not only was the one of the best BBC productions I have seen in many years but he was fantastic in it.

Ted Levine - 'Silence of the lambs"

Not at all, but the movie got much more of the attention then the players.


Primal Fear was great too - but not blockbuster big, so again.. not the credit he deserved.
