Hardware or software for Firewall ?
I was thinking I wanted to get the harware gateway/firewall instead of firewall software??
But you guys know better than me http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif What do you think? ------------------ Tracy ;) Fantasy Content http://www.fantasycontent.com |
I'm not an expert but I think...
Hardware pro: faster con: more expensive Software pro: cheaper (or free) con: slower As for the learning curve, I know the software firewalls have a fairly steep learning curve (at least IPchains and IPmasqurade seemed somewhat complicated when lots of rules were needed), not sure if hardware is ready to go out of the box or if it needs load of tweaking too. My guess is that everyone uses their firewall for different reasons, so they all have to be highly configurable... which means some learing needs to be done with either kind. A hardware firewall is certainly the more professional way to go IMHO. |
Hard ware is much more effective but its expensive. Software will stop the newbie hackers and slow the real ones. Easier and cheaper to just have a system only for surfing that you keep disconnected from your network unless you need to transfer data and just log off to do that.

Just bought a D-Link DI-704 with hardware firewall... it works like a champ... $79.00
