Hogie, Sub, Wedge or Grinder
The pickle thread reminded me about a slang issue when I moved here to Michigan from NY.
When you order a sandwich like the kind at subway from a deli in your area what do the call it? I always thought Wedge was the proper term. Besides the names I listed are ther any others you use in your region? What is the most common that people use nationwide? |
it's a SUB. anybody who tells you different is either a fag, communist or evil doer.
|
Well, here in upstate NY it's a "sub".. And any soda-pop style carbonated drink is a "soda"..

Shopping Carts are called Shopping Carts too... dont tell be you go for this "Buggy" shit too on top of everything else.. |
shopping cart is correct , buggy is very gay, might even be British.
|
big difference between Canadians and Americans is 'candy bar' versus 'chocolate bar'.
also Canadians refer to a particular year/grade in school like 'I failed Grade 4 twice' - American says 'I failed the fourth grade twice'. |
hehe, down south they call em buggies.. and they call all soda-pops a "coke".. yep.. regardless of brand or flavor..
add them to axis of evil. lol :glugglug |

here's another one not based on regions but based on hicktown versus city.
i grew up in a small town, 45,000, people when they would go to the movies would say 'Hey we're going to the show Saturday night wanna come?'. My sister still says it and I've been telling her for 25 years she sounds like a farmer. |
I've been informed that in the deep south, a sub is a po-boy..
|
Subs or Po-Boys down here. *smiles* Mostly Po-Boys... :)
And yeah, I usually say either coke or drink...not pop or soda... LOL And I always say basket, not shopping cart or buggy.... :Graucho :thumbsup |
Over here it's grinders if you go into a deli.
Shakes are called cabinets. |
Grinder
Soda Shopping Cart |
Del's & coffee milk :thumbsup
|
Sandwiches:
Deli sandwich, sub, po-boy, grinder. Used in that order here. Carbonated drinks: Coke, soda, soda-pop, pop. Used in that order here. Shopping carts: Only have heard them reffered to as shopping carts, carts, or baskets. One that gets me that also seems regional. Spaghetti sauce. Some places it is meat sauce, some places just sauce, some places its gravy. Then the various italian names of course. |
Haha yeah its a Po-Boy down here and yes everything is a coke!
Also when they ask what you want on the sandwhich you can say "Fully Dressed" and that means everything on it :thumbsup |
I live up in Upper Michigan (The chunk of land attached to Wisconsin) and up here it's Sub and Pop.
It's funny how Soda just doesn't sound right. |
I call it a sub.
Never heard of Wedge, sounds farmish. Although some people around Chicago call em Heroes, obviosly confusing them with the other product almost all subshops carry: Gyros It's really just a fucking sandwich.. |
