Will hosts as we know them die out soon ?
Just ran into this interesting article on Gigabit lines for home users:

I personally think in the not too distant future home-internet super high speed will be the norm.
So yea..i bet alot of hosts will dissapear...& alot of peepz in the adult biz will start running their own servers. (If they can find a ISP that allows it in their area). Then again..i know alot of people in the adult biz that cant design a site or run a server...so some hosting will alwayss be around http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/tongue.gif Plus isnt it safer to have your server/etc. in a secured location with 24-7 support? ------------------

Right on. I've been reading the board for a long time, hoping for a thread i could post to without looking like too much of an idiot.
You should take into account that there's a lot more to hosting than just providing the bandwidth. There's power backup, climate controls, the redundant connections, and the server administration for the people that don't know how. Plus, this super-fast home connection looks like its a ways away, and it'll cost a shitload. So ultimately, you'll probably see a lot of hosts sticking around. On the other hand, though, anything like this that makes it easier to host your own sites is definitely going to make Web hosting more of a buyer's market for Webmasters. Good article though. Liam |
I'm with Liam, when we pay for hosting we're paying for more than the machine and the line.
I do think the price of hosting will have to go down, it'll be so much cheaper for a hosting company to start up and run they'll be cutting each other's throats for the business. |

I think it'll depend on who you're catering to. If you're only worried about hosting a small bandwidth site to a moderate amount of traffic, then no problem. However, if you're going to be serving out picture/movie galleries or live feeds to a shit load of people, then the hosts will still be valuable.
At one time, I thought I might be able to serve at least some of my own sites with our sDSL. That time was very short lived because the rest of the net caught up pretty fast and just one surfer with a cable modem could tie up the whole line. There is the time factor, of course. If the home speeds were serving out at 1Gbit (something the company doesn't say it will even be a capability) then 20 high speed vistors at once would be okay... since they'd all have their downloads done in a blip or there'd be plenty room for a few simultaneous feeds without problem. If this new Gbit home-line is going to be anything like our local cable company (Comacast) then I want nothing to do with it. Those guys are out to dominate, crush and destroy any other options for data/media delivery. Not to say the local telco doesn't have a wee bit of leverage by owning most of the local copper loops, but it's pretty aggressive and downright ugly. The cable companies won't even allow a competeing product to advertise but they tun negative ads constantly. It's like the boneprone family gone mad. I thnk they're out to take over the world! |
Besides, even the big carriers like UUNet go down every once in a while. That's why pro hosting companies have 2 or 3 connections. So if you were serving your own site from home on this super-high-speed service, every time it went down, so would your site.
And if this service is anything like other high-speed services. Well, my DSL connection used to just disconnect itself every so often. No problem for surfing, but if i was running a Web server on it, i'd have to keep an eye on it all the time. Well it really should be a case of letting the experts look after the hosting, while you look after what you are best at...
I dont know about you guys, but I have enough problems without worrying about my connection going down while I am asleep or keeping backups 24/7... |
I think you're going one step ahead here.
what has been said is true, running a network 24/7 can't really be done from your bedroom, unless your bedroom has clean air and electricity and it's cool enough. Even if 100% of the people had the technical know how, it would be hard to keep up with your servers, what about if they go down in the middle of the night? Even now, there is a lot of home users (read somewhere that around 85% of internet users?not sure of this figure) that are on the sloppy 56k accounts. I think that there will be a middle stage where internet for the home gets faster, when a 95% of the users get broadband... then comes the BIG pipes this will allow the integration of telecomm services into 1, television, telephone etc, they can be hosed down a really quick pipe and sent to a suscriber's house... Think about the future of the adult web... 1.- one on one live feeds, a winner 2.- renting movies over the pipe (anonimous and instantaneous with a 1 gig pipe) 3.- multiple broadcast live feeds (same as #1 actually) and so on... Now, by the time the usual people gets the big pipes, what would be the ruling processor? 25 Gigahertz? with 100 gigs of RAM and a couple TB harddrives? what would be the average PC? and the list keeps going on...
