do potatos go bad??
I bought a bag of potatos a few weeks ago from Costco and I smelled something REALLY weird eminating from my pantry this afternoon. Wasn't quite sure what it was, but I thought it might have been these limes I bought.
They looked a little old, so I threw them out. Well I came back home tonight to find the weird smell still hasn't gone away. I waked into the pantry, and almost fucking died! So I figured it must be the potatos. I picked up the bag, and there's this nasty brown goo that dribbled all over a couple cases of bottled water, and formed a pretty big puddle underneath, dripped all the way out the door. Fucking disgusting shit, but I didn't know potatos did this shit??? Is this normal??? |
ya man, happened to me not too long ago
smells like fish or something |
Worse than fish! Smells like a dead body. I don't even know what a dead body smells like, but this has gotta be up there. It made me come soooo close to yaking, I fucking had to run to the sink gagging... it was disgusting.

do you really need to ask that after you typed about the brown liquid goo that dripped from them? :eek7 |
Dude, do I look like a chef? Or how about a botanist? No, I'm a pornographer. I had no idea this shit could happen, or I would have tossed them a week ago.
God DAMN I'm never buying potatoes again. Fuck that! Oh and for all of those that also didn't know potatoes are capable of stinking up your entire house, here's a very informative blog. http://www.livejournal.com/users/its...ck/180096.html |
If you store them in those stupid plastic bags and or in a damp enviroment they will go rancid and begin to decompose.
All root veggies should be stored in a cool, dark, moisture free area. I do not have the luxury of having a root celler, so I got some rubbermaid boxes spray painted the outsides black, then filled it mostly with sterilized sand. I just burry my carrots, potatoes, turnips etc in them. Onions on the other hand like plenty of air ciculation, so I hang them in my pantry. |

Any organic thing will eventually go bad...
|
in the hot weather keep your potatoes in the refrigerator.
or you will be sorry. :thumbsup |
yes - they turn black and grow roots - beyond food at that point
|
I buy dry potato flakes instead. It costs more, but they don't go bad. Plus you don't have to peel the damn things.
|
Not only do they smell and produce a brown goo, they also start sprouting, too.
|
yea, make sure you store them in a cool, dark not damp place and it will extend their life.
i can keep a bag good for about 30-60 days. one great tip that i got from martha stewart (the only one i use) is put an apple in the bag with the potatoes. for some reason they dont grow roots as fast and they dont go bad as fast. |
It's safe to say they are bad.

By the way, yes they do go bad. Just last longer due to the dehydration and chemical additives. |
this is a pretty funny thread :1orglaugh
|
Just freeze them next time :1orglaugh

They might look bad but you can still eat them. The older they get the more wonderfull the sensation you get when you eat them.
The colours man....spectacular! |
yes! it really can happen! potatoes need to be put in the frige. it happened to me a lot of times!
|
i'm shocked, i need a cigarette right now.
