in SE rank, how important are link to's? and outward links ?

Google has a way of searching to see how many sites link to you. They say link to's help your rank and outward links hurt it slightly. How important is this?

If you had 500 sites linking to each other it would be a wash? But if you had 499 sites link to 1 it would get a decent boost?

Dunno man... google confuses the shit out of me... Links to your site are good though thats all I know :D

Steen2 09-17-2004 11:02 PM

Your knowlege amazes me.

together, me and the "dunno" guy are quite the think tank.

It's not cut and dry like that. Inbound links will improve your rank. Outbound links to other domain take away from your internal linking structure, meaning less value is being passed along to pages within your own sites.

For example, if you have a PR5 page with 5 links, more value will be passed to each of those links. Put 500 links up and it will be spread so thin that almost no value will be passed to each page you link to.

OK to make it a little clearer. You have 5 pages on your site. Each links back to the main page. If you also put a link to another site, you're spreading the value those pages are sending back to your main page out, thus giving your main page a lower PR than if you ONLY linked back to the main page. Get it?

I didn't know it crawled the 'sub' pages and that mattered. Thanks a lot!

links in - gold
links out - useless

Spunky 09-17-2004 11:32 PM

Always link to higher page rank sites to improve your PR

pornguy 09-17-2004 11:34 PM

I dont think that links out are usless.

I think that is they are in the same niche, with similar key words, that they do not drop your rankings.

But you dont want to have a mature site with a bunch of links pointing to realestate sites.

:2 cents:

you need outbound links, as how can your site be valued as important and linking to good content?

sigh

im suprised people dont understand the importance of outbound and content and not just inbound.

all 3 factors are important, i understand linkpop but have you wondered why sites with thousands of inbound links rank worse than sites with few inbound?

stocktrader23 09-18-2004 02:25 AM

I make all my sites with 4 inbound links and 1000 outbound to relevant content. I love sending my traffic to others. :glugglug

{fusion} 09-18-2004 02:28 AM

heheh

{fusion} 09-18-2004 02:31 AM

hundred of irrelavant inbound links is a waste also, if this is the case, why dont people just spam FFA sites?

All I am going to say is when that Google Bot gets to your site, grab the little prick and lock him up and don't let him go! Should he escape leave him a map of how to get back!
