players

neither. this is going to be a long ass lockout. the players will give up major concessions this time - i doubt the NHL will get the hard salary cap they want but a soft cap they'll get. The NHLPA doesn't have a leg to stand on - it is obvious to everybody that hockey players are paid too much compared to their cousins in the NFL and the NBA who have TV contracts that are 10 times and more what the NHL has. NHL players make 75% of all revenues the league takes in - you don't see the union disputing that number because they know it's true. That's rape. It doesn't matter that the owners dug their own graves - the current deal is bad for the owners and the fans and the future of the sport, so it's got to be replaced by a new deal that protects the owners from themselves.

Good Points for sure

Players. The owners have a 300 million dollar war chest built up exactly for this. The will still lose money if there is no season, but they will lose less money not playing then they would playing. Bettman is trying to break the union and I think he's going to be able to do it.

The players will eventually agree to a "salary cap" of some sort - or at least some provision that they are calling a salary cap now, but after they agree to it, they will say it isn't really a salary cap, they'll insist it is a "profit sharing provision" or something like that. In that sense the players will cave first and a deal will happen - eventually.

Not that I give a shit. Major Junior Hockey suits me just fine.

players...and owners as several franchises will go under imho...NHL hockey isn't viable anymore in its current form.

I once calculated the number of sales you would have to make every two weeks on topbucks to equal an average NHL player's salary.

Lemme think what it was...

I think it was roughly 3500 sales every two weeks for a year to make the same as the average NHL player.

Players will cave and DAMN WELL should. I love hockey. But for fuck sakes these guys are paid millions to pay a fuckin' game!!

They are worried about the owners sharing revenue? The owners OWN the team, they should make lots of money. If the players were paid shit, ok complain but they are not, they are paid very good!

When I worked a regular job could I go to the owner and say Hey you had a good year so I want you to double my pay. You're making too much money.

:(

The players will give in first, hopefully by January atleast....

Some players will rather salvage half their NHL salary compared to getting 1/20th of it playing in other leagues.

Some players may not play the whole season even if it does come back though, I can see that happening.

SkyRunner 09-17-2004 09:44 AM

Since a couple of NHL-Players are playing in Germany as long as the NHL-Season doesn't start, I hope they cancel the whole season :thumbsup

But I actually don't care much about hockey at all
:1orglaugh I just like the "fight-mode" in EA Sports' NHL-Series :glugglug

Goatse 09-17-2004 07:00 PM

Neither. They will agree on some type of revenue sharing system (no cap) and both sides will claim victory.

Spunky 09-17-2004 07:03 PM

I think both sides will eventually lower their demands a bit as time goes on..they all know it is going to hurt the game in the long run
