There is a meaning to life. It is not glib, glamorous or humorous (although it may sound so at first). The meaning of life is simply to keep meat fresh. Think about this for a moment and you will probably realize humanities most perplexing question has just been answered. You will also probably always remember where you were when you read the answer.

After taking a serious (and my last) dose of LSD I was walking through the woods with a friend and a strange wibbly rent in reality came wobling its way down the path, past straight though us and I turned to watch it continue into the distance. Pretty soon after this my mind, on its own accord, started racing away at full speed. I could feel it thinking at speeds it had never worked at before but had no idea what it was thinking about. Faster and faster until it started to hurt until I thought I couldnt take it any more, then it stopped. And there was the answer. THE ANSWER. It was so plain and simple, too plain and simple you would never get it. It made the whole human race seem worthless. I tried to comunicate this to my friend urgently but I had no control over my mouth, just this mumbling came out - I couldnt speak. Panic. I've just unraveled THE point to the whole meaning of life and I cant comunicate it to anyone. Now my mind is going crazy again, cant get my breath, hearts going like mad.

Huh? is that me I see lying on the floor? why am I lying on the floor? Hang on, why can I SEE me lying on the floor?

The truth is that life has no meaning, other than perhaps that of perpetuating your genes. Life is a frail concept, by the way. Are we really life? We are biological machines, nothing more. Beyond that, the universe will eventually collapse and rebirth, and since nothing will survive it or affect the next universe in any way (other than mass), nothing really matters in the end.

I thought 42 was the answer to the 'Ultimate question'.. not the meaning of life.. but I could be wrong, has been years since I read HHGTG

.... all I know is that we are all made up of starstuff and we only have a finite amount of time on the Earth so we may as well get the shit happening before it's too late rather than not!

Well, that was the point of the whole series of books wasn't it? To find out the question itself? Cos they had the answer, just had to trace it back and figure out the question, which is why it was the ultimate question..
