What is your definition of a REAL webmaster?

Im looking for the GFY edition of the definition.

I have my own view but I would like to here others.

ShellyCrash 09-15-2004 09:34 PM

Why would the definition at GFY differ from anywhere else?

ShellyCrash 09-15-2004 09:47 PM

Maybe I'm not a webmaster by GFY standards?
My day to day job does occasionally involve fixing glitches. I went to school for it, and before I started working here I did manage a few sites, but to be honest the site I work for now is so over my head.

Rochard 09-15-2004 09:51 PM

a webmaster is someone who makes webpages. I work on web pages daily.

An "adult webmaster" seems to be any one who works in the adult Internet industry, be it sales or what not.

FlyingIguana 09-15-2004 09:57 PM

web·mas·ter ( P ) Pronunciation Key (wbmstr)
n.
A person whose occupation is designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining websites.

fr8 09-15-2004 10:00 PM

Hmm. Most of my views were based on what the person knows and what they could do. Example knowing the html/php/mysql, building traffic, converting the traffic. Graphics editor being a plus and so on.

fr8 09-15-2004 10:03 PM

And for the surfers. Spending your time on GFY doesnt make you a webmaster.

Yes it is true. the definition of a true webmaster is someone who can submit galleries in between changing out fry baskets from the deep fryer and answering the drive thru headset....

that is what I consider a webmaster. we hire only the best.

Webmaster is a superhero. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, which gave him superhuman strength and arachnoid powers such as the ability to climb walls without equipment and shoot webs from his wrists.

He is a powerful force against evil in New York City. Evildoers, beware the Webmaster!

Well somebody that runs a web site(s) and makes or is attempting to make money with it...

polish_aristocrat 09-16-2004 05:32 AM

Webmaster? That would be someone who has web creation / programming/ designing skills.

Webmaster as a short term for "adult webmaster"? That would be someone who makes some money in this industry.

escorpio 09-16-2004 07:02 AM

A fat guy that has managed to parlay his pornography addiction into a few bucks.

dennisthemenace 09-16-2004 07:10 AM

Someone who makes websites.

Voodoo 09-16-2004 07:12 AM

I think it's said best by modifying the literal definition:

web·mas·ter ( P ) Pronunciation Key (wbmstr)
n.
A person whose occupation is designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining websites. (As posted by bdjuf)

Should read as follows to be accurate:
web·mas·ter ( P ) Pronunciation Key (wbmstr)
n.
A person whose occupation is designing, developing, marketing, AND maintaining websites.

..........

A true "Webmaster" is the sum of ALL of it's parts. Not a single part individually. Someone who solely "designs" is a "designer". Someone who "codes or develops" is a "developer", someone who "markets" is a "marketing rep or sales associate", and so on and so forth.

A "Master" by definition is someone who is a worker qualified to teach apprentices and carry on the craft independently. Now pertaining to the word "webmaster", when broken down to it's parts means:

web - Internet
master - A worker qualified to teach apprentices and carry on the craft independently.

And combined means: A worker of the internet qualified to teach apprentices and carry on the craft independently.

.......
Now, it can be argued that someone who "designs" is a "webmaster" since they "work with the web" however, the "web or internet" is not solely comprised of designer output. It also requres networks, coding, marketing, search engines, sales, and so on for it to to function in it's current state.

So to "master" the "web", one must be skilled in ALL areas of the internet to truely be considered a "webmaster".
