i believe each one of those tracks is by each of the various "models" the weather people use to predict where it is going to go.

That's correct, but look at the directions. They have it going crisscross and backwards.

Holly 09-15-2004 04:54 PM

They're 50 foot at the big pier near the state park in AL. I'm watching it on the news right now. I don't think it will hold up. There are two people dead in Panama City Beach, already.

ilsoph 09-15-2004 05:01 PM

If you'd surf a 50 footer then you've got bigger balls than I do. I've been tossed around like a sack of cottonballs by 14 footers!

Out of all the bullets we've dodged in Tampa this hurricane season, Ivan was the howitzer round.

Sly 09-15-2004 05:07 PM

I'm waiting for pictures of KMR Stitch riding the storm out.

Furious_Male 09-15-2004 05:08 PM

I wonder if there are any crazy fucks trying to surf those waves.

Persius 09-15-2004 05:09 PM

This means it's going to stall out and really cause big problems, flooding, mud slides, etc.
We haven't recovered from the last one yet.

:(

Anyone heard from Mike AI at the DirectNIC datacenter in New Orleans?

We had a window seal blow out in our office with only 70 MPH winds from Frances.

He posted about an hour ago at O. Nothing about the hurricane though. From what I've heard it's not supposed to make landfall until 2AMish.

Whoops - yes he DID say something about the hurricane :)

"Still sitting in DirectNIC's 11th floor office. Not much to report. No rain yet. Some wind, but no more then 15mph. It is actually very boring."

But again, they have several more hours before the really bad stuff hits

DWB 09-15-2004 07:36 PM

They had reports of 60 footers in Negril a few days ago. That is just insane.

Is there another one coming after IVAN? They seem to be getting bigger and bigger? :(

pornguy 09-15-2004 09:09 PM

I thougth that Aussie had the biggest there at the reefe.

Have you ever seen any of the specials on discovery or anything about the killer waves??

Some reaching 200+ feet.

Cory W 09-15-2004 09:11 PM

I spoke with Mike around 4:00 Pacific time. He and Billy actually went out and got some pics of Ponchatrain, expect some to be posted.

They don't think the levies will break on the lake, which is the largest potential issue the city has to worry about. The east side of the storm is the better side.

He sounded confident all would be ok.

A small section in the Pacific, about 60+ miles west of Catalina, is the new big wave spot. It was discovered by fisherman and deemed a myth by Californians; 2 years ago, surfers verified the spot and used it for the annual big wave contest. I believe it pulls in about 60 foot waves.

200 feet would be too large for a tow-in ride as the jet skis would not give the surfer enough energy to get on a lip and survive.

You have to be towed in to any big wave. I have been out on 15+ days (paddling of course), there is absolutely nothing worse than going down into that dark abyss. Anyone thinking 50 foot waves is a good surfing day has little idea the sheer power the ocean has to offer :winkwink:
