I'd like to see another Designer Competition

You know the thing - give everyone one site name, one niche, a standard amount of content that everyone has to use (no outside purcahses allowed) and a set time limit.

All entires put to a vote, winner takes all.
Losers may pay a small license fee for the content and then re-sell their designs.

Jakke PNG 09-15-2004 07:29 AM

I concur.
The last GFY design contest went so smoothly, I think the new one would too.

No other designers here that would be interested in this?

Contests are for the birds.

Half the time the winner just gets lucky and fits the style of who holds the contest.

We, as designers, have the one profession where something can look like ass to one person, then look unreal to another, hence why contests are a waste of time and effort (unless a noob who has no work and needs to showcase their own style).

Just :2 cents:

All perfectly true, however:

Why not? If there is something in it for you (exposure, being able to sell a losing deisgn afterwards) why would you not want to do this?

Valid reasons include:

- Too busy with booked work to devote time to a "maybe"

Uh, that's the only one I can think of.

I just think it would be fun. Give everyone a fair shot at some prizes and such and be a great advertising tool at the same time.

I agree, as a designer you can never meet everyones standard of what looks fantastic! The only people I aim to please is my clients, and so far none have walked away unsatisfied.

Not to mention, energy spent on the contest cold be better spent makreting yourself and your skills in other more profitable ways. I dont believe a contest is a good ROI unless like dude said you are new and looking to show off your stuff

Of course, you're perfectly correct. But I'm not talking about a compo that would last for 2 days or even two weeks. It would have a month for everyone to spend as much time *outside of their paid work* to get everything done.

You can't please all the people all of the time, but surely you're confident enough in your ability that that wouldn't come into play?

I remember the last one - it had so many entries it was staggering.

or just to see whos da man

:Graucho

(also sometimes is cool just to have fun, or see how are the skills around the designers on the board, or exposure, you never know whos gonna see the shit)

JakeR 09-15-2004 08:35 AM

I thought the last contest was pretty cool

I had a dog, and his name was...

BINGO!

Brujah 09-15-2004 09:25 AM

I think it's a great idea Railz. Not just that, it's a contest for the designers who want to participate. The designers that don't want to do it, no one's twisting their arm.

Go for it!
:thumbsup

railz 09-15-2004 09:33 AM

One of my personal Gods has spoken! :)

Seriously though, wouldn't this be a grea idea for everyone?

The prizes don't have to be huge - the problems in the last one were because the prizes were so massive (at least that's my theory).

Make them nice, but reasonable. Add in the fact that you can sell your design on if you lose afterwards and I personally can't see how anyone could have a problem with it?

jawanda 09-15-2004 09:49 AM

I'm definitely in, Railz.

When was the last contest? I don't remember seeing it.

Anyway... winner's got to be decided by a GFY-wide vote, or a large judging panel to keep things fair. Is that how they did it last time?

Right - I remember the drama behind it.

But if we made it smaller, kept the prizes in line for something that you could do in your free time over the course of a month, it might work.

Mutt 09-15-2004 10:10 AM

who won the last one and is the site design that won online ?

I believe Amp won it. But don't quote me on that. Was a while ago and I cannot find the judging thread.

Zayne E. 09-15-2004 10:48 AM

It was won by an adult.com in-house designer. Amp took second and I took third. The winning design was a "girls gone wild" kind of design...can't remember exact URL. Amp's submission was one of snow's mafia sites and I presented hotxxxblonde.com (now one of pimproll's sites).

Hope that bit of info helps out.

railz 09-15-2004 10:49 AM

Thanks. Knew it was something like that.

thediablo 09-15-2004 10:51 AM

so so so, what are we waiting for huh huh huh

Roald 09-15-2004 10:53 AM

Nice idea, last time I didn't have enough time so when there will be a new one I will try to enter :thumbsup

Note: All entries should be showcased without any name attached to it so there won't be any asskissing:2 cents:

railz 09-15-2004 11:38 AM

So we need prizes, someone to step up with content, to decide on a niche, come up with a name for the site and draw up some rules.
