Is your site compatible with all browsers?? IE now only 57%

According to this article:
http://calacanis.weblogsinc.com/entry/5574794258282236/

Here is the breakdown of the browser market:

Internet Explorer 6.x 53%

Firefox 18.16%

Safari 11.25%

Internet Explorer 5.x 4.07%

Mozilla 3.18%

Opera 2.50%

Netscape 7.x 1.42%

BTW Firefox users, there was an exploit released yesterday and requires upgrade to the latest version

Trax 09-15-2004 07:05 AM

lol
you don't believe those numbers, do you?

My website still shows that 88% of my visitors are using IE
2.5 % are using firefox

hydro 09-15-2004 07:07 AM

that survey was probably taken from more advanced computer users, not your every day surfer.

zvik 09-15-2004 07:08 AM

Please, call these guys liers too.

Luc 09-15-2004 07:29 AM

ehh.

you honestly think the average computer user actually knows
where to get or how to install a new browser.

most people are too stupid to change the default MSN.com
start page, not to mention install a "browser". fuck, they don't
even know what IE is.

i think IE eats up about 98% of the market, just because it's
preloaded, easy to use and there is really no good reason to
install anything else (especially after SP2).

peace,
luc l.

(The statistics above are extracted from W3Schools' log-files, but we are also monitoring other sources around the Internet to assure the quality of these figures)

Their audience is predominantly tech savvy designers and webmasters, etc. It's not an accurate representation of the browser market. Even now, IE still has between 85 and 95 percent of the general browser market depending on where you go. You'll only see numbers like 50, 60 or 70 percent at places like wired or slashdot, etc.

But even so, yo'ud have to be a fool not to optimise your website to work in all browsers, in my opinion.

Probably fluctuates alot with techIQ of your visitors. Ie a more techie site like Slashdot might have 50% + firebird users for example.

The bottom line is, if your site doesn't work properly in Firefox and Safari (Mac) then you're losing a decent % of sales.

Hah! You ALMOST got me to spit my water over everything with that post.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe SP2 has been touted as one of the worst SP's ever?

No good reasons to NOT use IE?? :1orglaugh

soooooooo true

Giorgio_Xo 09-15-2004 08:16 AM

IE is 90.3% of my surfers.

FuckFind 09-15-2004 08:18 AM

Percentages don't really matter to me,, i don't think they should matter to ANY other designer producing work for clients.

Facts are facts, different broswers are used, thats all I really need to know.

If a designer doesn't show you 5-6 screenshots of the big browsers (ie, mozilla, opera, netscape, safari (if possible), etc. etc.) of the site you produce they should be shot.

Another big thing is flash features implemented into a site, because each of these browsers reads flash versions differently and certain flash features of Flash 5, 6, 7, etc. So basically, a Flash 6 feature that works and looks pimp in IE may not even function in Mozilla (such as windowless transparency, etc.). A very good reason to down-save all flash and ensure functionality works with Flash 5, the most widely used across the board. These are reasons why sites like 2advanced and such are really becoming "yawners" to me personally... i really wonder the differences in demographics between Flash 5 installed and Flash 7 are so if anyone has this info post it, i'll give you a cookie. But hell i guess 2advanced targets a niche and do it damn well so nothing to shit on, just commenting.

There are always trade offs, but I don't like wasting an experience on even 2% of traffic, and neither do my clients. If you are working on a major project for someone (as I am currently) and the site is pushing significant traffic, those small %'ages add up to significant revenues that can make a good project great or a piss poor product break even.

In my opinion, the days of only making a site "look pimp" are somewhat obselete, usability is just as important, something all these $5 dollar banner noobs will finally realize in 3-4 years (hopefully anyway).

FF

And PS>>> SP2 blows dick. Period.

And that is not going to change anytime soon :2 cents:

Manowar 09-15-2004 08:28 AM

Firefox owns :glugglug

ivil_klown 09-15-2004 08:37 AM

Yup! IE pretty much owns most of it. I guess its because its the default on MS, damn Bill Gates! he's getting richer by the minute.

Tuga 09-15-2004 08:40 AM

Look at Netscape :1orglaugh

Tipsy 09-15-2004 12:29 PM

MS Internet Explorer No 530014 86.2 %
Mozilla No 30820 5 %
Netscape No 24715 4 %
Opera No 10728 1.7 %
Safari No 8483 1.3 %
Unknown ? 4504 0.7 %
Firebird No 834 0.1 %
Nokia Browser (PDA/Phone browser) No 801 0.1 %
WebTV browser No 653 0.1 %
Konqueror No 467 0 %

Hits to one of my sites this month. All porn surfers and not techy types :) Shows you gotta be careful where you get stats from.

As has been said though it's generally daft not to make sure a site works in all browsers. Good coding shouldn't have a problem anyway and only takes a few seconds to fire up firefox etc if you don't use them by default and check.

johndoebob 09-15-2004 12:31 PM

Todays stats from a site of me, top 5 browsers:

Browsers Grabber Hits Percent
MS Internet Explorer No 680891 81.9 %
Netscape No 54598 6.5 %
Mozilla No 47312 5.6 %
Opera No 19002 2.2 %
Safari No 12788 1.5 %

Btw Opera's standart setting is set to browser agent = Internet Explorer.
