Scratched CDs - Copying?
 

Is there some sort of software that will image a CD to the HDD for copying that will attempt over and over to read the scratched parts so I can burn a non-skipping audio CD of my favorite old CDs that are scratched.

My Liszt - De Profundis is irrevocably scratched due to fantastic usage and I can't find a new one to buy anywhere.

some of the dvd rental shops here have machines that will remove scratches from CDs and they are quite good. You should be able to find one local :)

Why?
If it's really really scratched no matter how many times you try to read it, it wont come through, just take it to a local shop. Otherwise try EAC. Good proggy.

It depends on if the scratches run from the edge to the center or they are circular. CD is read like a record, laser moves around the circumferance of the cd, the better the laser the more skips it will fill in, but even good laz\sers can not read when the scratch is in the groove. As long as the top (the foil part) of the cd is not damaged you should be fine, the data is on that, the bottom of the cd is just a thin plastic disk that the info holding part is bonded to, if you buff it down to clearness the cd is fine. So do not put a cd on the label to protect it, if you scratch that game over, throw the cd away.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested yet - but try waxing the bottom of your cd's with car wax :-) go through the whole process - wash them with a mild, warm soap solution and a VERY SOFT cloth, NOT terry cloth - try a cloth baby diaper or the inside of a sock (for christ's sake, use this for your car too). Then use a separate clean, dry super-soft cloth to apply the wax, apply in small circles, using very little pressure. Finally, use a 3rd clean + dry super soft cloth to buff the surface - I generally wipe from the center of the CD to the outside Edge (in the case that the buffing process causes any fine scratches,- those that are perpendicular to the CD "grooves" cause little or no distortion). I've done this on dozens of CD's to get my songs onto my Ipod - and it's worked great! I'd say this method will fix 80% - 90% of scratches. It won't fix the huge ones, but it's better than nothing :thumbsup
