Oprah is a Class Act

To celebrate her 19th season, Oprah secretly arranged for the studio audience to be all people who needed new cars but couldn't afford them.

She said 12 lucky audience members would get new cars. Then she told the audience to look under their seats and open the gift box and that one of the boxes had a set of keys and one more person had won a car.

When each person opened their gift box each had a set of keys. So all 276 got brand new cars. (Over $8 Million)

That's real class and utter generosity in my book.

:thumbsup

Peaches 09-13-2004 11:50 AM

WOW! That's $30K a car so they got decent ones too. :)

Odie 09-13-2004 11:50 AM

wow!! I'm sure some of them were donated of course..the publicity the automakers would get makes up for the donation.

what kind of cars did they get??

that is still awesome tho! go oprah!!:thumbsup

Michael O 09-13-2004 11:51 AM

Wow nice.

I like the shows where she gives away stuff to people that really needs it.

Marcus Aurelius 09-13-2004 11:51 AM

shes very generous because she can afford to be. she is a good hearted person and it shows.

n3in 09-13-2004 11:52 AM

what kind of cars did they get? in the picture it looks like a pontiac G6

stevecore 09-13-2004 11:53 AM

dammit, i was supposed to go to that show but cancelled to go car shopping. :feels-hot :1orglaugh

Daymare 09-13-2004 11:53 AM

holy shit...

the funny thing is she makes $500,000 a day ($150m a year) so it will take her 2 weeks to make that back; but still... that's a VERY nice thing to do :thumbsup

Yeh, I think so. Show comes on in an hour.

Luc 09-13-2004 11:54 AM

Very nice of her.

What's even more surprising is that most of the people on
that picture are white. I thought she would be more inclined
to give the new rides to the brothers, since she has a history
of being extra nice to blacks (no duhh).

Luc L.

maxjohan 09-13-2004 11:54 AM

Thats really nice.

500k an episode. but do you really think with money like that its her only source of income? not likely.

Evil Chris 09-13-2004 11:55 AM

That is indeed pretty awesome.

robfantasy 09-13-2004 11:55 AM

wow that is a nice gesture

Big Ray 09-13-2004 11:57 AM

I think it's a nice gesture.. however, I personally believe her motives are self serving. A true Philanthropist derives satisfaction from the act of giving, not the act of receiving recognition for giving.

I also could think of a several ways that money could be better well gifted.

If recognition for giving is what she is after, how about grabbing a camera crew, walking through a children?s hospital and paying the medical debts of parents with sick or dieing children. She would get more self serving recognition doing that, than giving away 100 cars.

Why do people so quickly assume black people don't have money and white people all do?

There are more poor white folks in this country by far.

Luc 09-13-2004 12:07 PM

Once again, because she has a history of being much nicer
to blacks. Which is understandable.

You're telling me that if we put 20 people in the room, 10 black
and 10 white, there will be more poor whites than blacks?

Don't think so.

yep, very understandable. the other way would be racist and hateful but.

Mostly people give away things because they want to help or want see other people happy.(atleast that is the way it should be)

Why so bitter?

Just dont take it personal, because I think the same sometimes.

You dont want to be blue-eyed. But you got try to stay positive too.

In this case, why not give her a little credit instead :).

Life is complicated today. Way too many aspects and
time today. In 2000 years people will be psychotic morons.

kristin 09-13-2004 12:22 PM

She does do a lot of nice things like this for people who need. It would be great to be able to share the wealth that she has.

ytcracker 09-13-2004 12:24 PM

i almost cried reading this

i seriously thought all of this shit was gone in the world

my god

bless oprah

The cars, which retail for $28,000, were donated by Pontiac.
im sure oprah obviously had something to do with it though
so i still give her props

myjah 09-13-2004 12:56 PM

That is soo cool. There are few times in life as an adult when you have wonderful moments like those.

Tanker 09-13-2004 02:00 PM

that was an amazing show

emthree 09-13-2004 02:28 PM

We'll see one or two on ebay shortly.

I wonder how those people will manage to pay car insurance. :(

Great gesture, but looks poorly executed. From the exposure i've seen, Pontiac was not even really mentioned. :2 cents:

Rich 09-13-2004 03:14 PM

Class act? It's called a publicity stunt, and she didn't pay for the cars.

badmunchkin 09-13-2004 03:17 PM

The cars were donated - big deal. It's called media manipulation - they make you belkieve what they want you to believe about someone.

Vitasoy 09-13-2004 03:17 PM

So this was the big big surprise...

Wow. Everyone's a cynic these days. The lady gives away 276 cars, and she's self serving. :1orglaugh

Oh and please tell us sir - what have you done for the community lately, that gives you the right to ride such a high horse? :)

She did not give away any cars, GM did.

I don't think she's generouse because she can afford to be, but she is genearous and she can afford to be REAL generous. I'd like to have the kind of money she has, my favorite causes would finally have the kind of funding they need to make a big difference in the world.

Rankings 09-13-2004 06:11 PM

no matter who did it, it's still cool

Nysus 09-13-2004 06:14 PM

That's pretty disgusting in my opinion.

Yes, I know she helps out good causes BUT 90% of those people likely already have 1 or more cars.

Why not give $1,000 to 8,000 families below the poverty line?

I know she likely has done that, but still, then make it $1,000 to 16,000 families below the poverty line..

Matt

Oprah is very generous but I think the cars are donated by GM..like most of the products that are given away on her show, they are a courtesy of the product's maker or seller. This is just simply another form of advertising for the companies (give away free stuff and hopefully the people watching at home will go get one because Oprah recommended it).

It's smart really...since the vast population of spenders are usually women and ALL women watch Oprah or atleast have seen her show.

To give away a few hundred to the audience is simply nothing when you can get at least 5% of the viewers at home to actually buy the product after it hits Oprah's Hot list.

Screaming 09-13-2004 09:24 PM

she is a great person, even though she has more money then she knows what to do with she seems to be a down to earth person and a great giver! yes the cars were donated but do u know many other people that GM would do that for, i dont

Shoehorn! 09-13-2004 09:29 PM

The cars were donated by Pontiac, not a dime came out of Oprah's pocket. I'd say Pontiac is the class act. :2 cents:

KDizzla 09-13-2004 09:45 PM

Fuck the drama.. It was cool as fuck of her!

pornguy 09-13-2004 09:50 PM

Yeah nice stunt.

How about taking that money and helping some people mthat really need the help.

If they could not afford cars, then what the fuck were they doing sitting on their asses in her studio??

Dont you think that it would have been better if they were getting jobs.??

Now they have cars that they can not afford to insure.

Nice, 200+ people on the road now without insurance, because they dont have money, because it is a lot easier to watch opra than to work.

Nice JOB Opra.

Thomas N 09-13-2004 09:52 PM

SHE didn't donate anything. The cars were donated by the manufacturer, including the manufacturer agreeing to pay for customized options for each persons vehicle.

Oprah is just the one who ends up getting the free publicity & exposure from tards who don't look past the surface of such shameless self promotion.

Class would be her donating them herself, in PRIVATE behind closed doors and no one ever hearing about it. Big difference.

Brujah 09-13-2004 10:10 PM

Who cares HOW 276 people got brand new cars. Oprah made it happen with the help of Pontiac. Props to Oprah ( and Pontiac ).

:thumbsup

When you can arrange to give away 276 brand new cars that someone else donates, Props to you too.

johnvod 09-13-2004 10:31 PM

The ability to give is an incredible gift itself.

More power to her and her success.

(although the cars were provided by Pontiac)
