interesting USA crime data re: rape/sexual assault
For years various right-wing (mostly Bible-belt fundamentalists) have postulated that the availability of sexually explicit imagery (porn) in the United States has increased violence against women, rape, sexual assault, etc.
People seem to forget that western Europe (notably Scandinavia and Denmark) has had sexually explicit content for at least 40 years now, and those countries have seen a drop in rape and sexual assault. So now the good 'ol USA has had hard-core smut for at least the last 30 years readily available (and more available all the time). Take a look at the most recent USA crime statistics: http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/09/12/cr....ap/index.html See which crime category has had the most significant decrease. Maybe what the folks in Denmark have been saying all these years is true. Very hard to rape a woman when a guy has just jacked off to some quality, readily-available porn. Things that make you go hmmmmmm....:) |
I once got into conversasion with one of these right wingers. When I pointed out to him that all the countries legalising porn had seen a drop in sexual crime he said this was becasue these countries had also altered the laws of what constituted sexual crime.
