I feel bad for you. You're position regarding assault weapons has been horribly twisted by the media.

Assault weapons (specifically AR-15's) ARE used extensively for target shooting and hunting.

There are many national competition, in which highly skilled individuals shoot out to over 600 yards with open iron sights. It takes tremendous skill and ability to hold an 8-10 pound rifle steady enough to align your sights out to a distance that far.

It's a blast to attend, and compete in such a demanding sport.

Futhermore, many individuals do hunt with assault rifles. Because of they are usually chambered in a small round, they are limited to hunting small game. Many hunt varmint and other animals. However, unlike what the media portrays, they don't hunt with 90 round magazines. The Department of Fish and Game regulates hunting, and stipulates that in many places you can only hunt with a 10 round magazine.

Assault weapons do not have a higher rate of fire or "capacity for firepower" than a garden-variety deer rifle: all "assault weapons" are semi-automatic firearms, which means that they fire a single round per trigger pull; they are not the fully-automatic machine guns that they are frequently misrepresented as.

Message to the morons: Crime goes DOWN when law abiding people own more guns. Crime goes UP when guns are taken away from law abiding people.

Criminals are labeled that because they are law breakers. So criminals don't give a fuck about gun laws. Laws do not stop criminals from owning guns because they do not follow the laws.

I may be wrong but I think statistics show more people are shot by accident by someone they know than shoot criminals or used in protection. In fact I did read you are more likely to have the criminal shoot you with your own gun than you are to shoot him.

Firearms in private hands are used 2.5 million times each year to prevent crime, or 6,849 times per day. That includes rape, aggrevated assault, and kidnapping. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal?s) is shed.

It's a big myth that you are more likely to be injured or killed using a gun for self defense.

25% of all people are hurt if they do nothing at all.
40% of all people are hurt if they resist with a knife.

WRONG! Automatic weapons have been illegal since the Gun Control Act of 1969. The "assault weapons ban" doesn't ban any assault weapons. It bans magazines over a certain capacity, flash suppressors, rifles with pistol grips and bayonet lugs (because of all those inner city drive by bayonettings).

You can legally own automatic weapons if you have a Class 3 firearms license.

The Assault Weapons ban banned the manufacture and importation of new guns falling with a certain number of features. All it really means is you pay $1000+ for a preban gun. The assault weapons ban actually helped a lot of people who already owned them by making their collections more valuable.

I dont want to live in a country were everyone has to carryaround a gun; I also don't want to live in a country where only the police and soldiers carry them. Enough said.

I don't see why people are uptight about the AWB expiring. All the AWB did was outlaw assault rifle replicas (not real assault rifles, despite what the media would want you to believe). It was tantamount to banning those big aluminum wings and 5" exhaust tips in order to keep Top Fuel dragsters from being driven on the street. So come tomorrow there will be a ton of replica "assault weapons" with all the cosmetic visual bells & whistles, but w/o the firepower that real assault weapons have (ie. full auto mode).
