I'm no drummer, but I love to play "air drums" to "Tom Sawyer." Neal Peart is incredible.

From his web site:

"But it is no secret that it's Virgil's feet that have gained him the most attention, both in Australia and internationally. Having developed incredible speed both with single and double-stroke rolls on the bass drums, he is able to hold complex, often odd-time and syncopated ostinatos at ridiculous tempos with his feet whilst soloing freely and musically with his hands."

Of the people I saw play live ginger Baker was head and shoulder above the others in the 60s.

Unfortunately I saw him in the 90s when he played with Jack Bruce and someone else and he was a shadow of his former self.

Shit I get up at 6am every day. It's required since there's a baby in the house. I've already cooked breakfast, done laundry, cleaned up and done some coding.

these guys are talented chops musicians (Dream Theater), no doubt, but other than that i think they blow bile bicuits. I cannot associate with anyone who listens to them, or played dungeons and dragons as a child.

I'm surprised that not one person mentioned Carmen Appice.

Kieth Moon

Slick 09-12-2004 08:05 AM

Portnoy and Lombardo are on my list :)

One other drummer that not many people have heard of is Ted Kirkpatrick, he plays for a christian metal band called Tourniquet He's definately my number one drummer. Their "Stop The Bleeding", "Psycho Surgery" and "Vanishing Lessons" are kick ass cds. The last couple they put out, haven't been as good.

I just went to their website to see what I could show you and see that they recently released a DVD with his drum solos and other stuff, I'm ordering it right now :) If you wanna see some kick ass drumming, pick it up, I promise you, you'll be blown away.

Here's a link to the movie trailer of the dvd, you can get a little idea of what he's like. I wish that it showed a little more though -

Neal Peart

No one else can even dream of coming close to these two gentlemen.

CDSmith 09-12-2004 09:25 AM

#1 of all time = Keith Moon. Even today's noteworthy drummers (who have mostly all been mentioned here) know that.

A couple of guys who haven't been mentioned but are certainly worth a mention are:

Alex Van Halen
Sib Hashian (Boston)

Goatse 09-12-2004 10:42 AM

Many drummers can play fast or complicated stuff, but in the context of a band, no one was better than John Bonham and Keith Moon.

phonephucker 09-12-2004 10:45 AM

kenny wilson (aka: ginger fish) drummer for marilyn manson
