Who has the BOSE Companion 3?

http://www.bose.com - Companion 3 Multimedia System

I really need a better sub/speaker setup.
Who has this system?

How good is the bass?

Fabuleux 09-10-2004 08:22 AM

Bose sucks. Visit some HIFI forums and you will see. People buy it because of the name. Do yourself a favour and buy something else :)

bangman- 09-10-2004 08:22 AM

suggestions? :Graucho

Groove 09-10-2004 08:23 AM

Bose is over rated and over priced. :2 cents:

bangman- 09-10-2004 08:24 AM

I remember seeing this one system that looked great, I forget the name though. Gonna google it now...

First-up the smaller the speaker the worse the sound.

But if you need tiny speakers try Definitive Technology:

http://www.definitivetech.com/

MUCH better quality than Bose and a fraction of the price.

As for which AMP (surround sound tuner?), CD, DVD, etc,
go into a reputable high-fi store (one with a dedicated
listening room) and determine what sounds best to you.

loverboy 09-10-2004 08:42 AM

go check out Altec Lansing for more choices

Definitive Technology, believe me i heard almost every speaker out there, and theses impressed me the most for watching movies. but they are quite expensive.

Size really doesn't matter, but it's for my computer and I haven't read enough into that site to see what they are designed for...
I did read that the SuperCubes have 1500 watts alone.... am I reading this right?

I bought a cheapie system a couple years ago that said it had 1500 Watts PMTO (?) and it sounds like shit, so I don't know.

Thanks for the link/comments :)

my brother installed a thing on his chair that shakes the chair like bass of a car, put on the earphones and it really sounds and feels like your sitting in a car with an awesome stereo, you can by a device for 150 bucks. and a pair of decent earphones for 100 bucks, best i can think of for the computer and games.

My mother wanted a surround sound system with unobtrusive speakers, so I read a lot of reviews and I listened to a lot of systems. Definitive Technology speakers is what I ended-up recommending, plus a Sony surround sound tuner. The system is awsome! MUCH, MUCH better than Bose and cheaper.

remember dont judge a speaker by watts.

but also dB/m

for every time watts double it gains 3 db/m

so if a speaker starts at 92db/m it takes
@2watts 95db/m
@4watts 98db/m
@8watts 101db/m
@16watts 103db/m

400watts to 800watts is only 3db difference.

but as you see a speaker that someone says is 100watts @ 102db/m can by just as loud at a 400watts @ 92db/m

just giving example. my calculations are not perfect, i just woke up.

If larger speakers are OK, then get larger ones. Provided you
get a good brand they will sound better and cost less.

Definitive would be overkill for a computer unless you are using
it as your primary sound system or have cash to burn :)

Whatever you do, listen to the system with one of your own CDs
(ie music you are familiar with) before you buy. And crank it up
nice and loud to see what happens when you stress it a bit.

Just looking for a decent system that has some excellent bass. I'm becoming a big Drum & Bass head, so bass is a must :)

I appreciate your advice, it's really helping me. Thanks bud :thumbsup

Small speakers are fine with the high end and a good subwoofer can help with the bass. Where you will have a big problem with small speakers is that the mid range (eg voices) is pathetic.

Fucksakes 09-10-2004 09:21 AM

bass as in rumble or punch?

smaller subs give a good punch and the bigger ones make more rumble shake shit more.

I have the Companion 3 and they are fantastic. I upgraded from Klipsch Promedia 2's.

Sosa 09-10-2004 09:48 AM
