Best Rolling Stones song ever?

For sheer nuance and internal diversity.... Monkey Man is their best work ever....

at least, that's my opinion.

What's your pick?

candyflip 09-09-2004 05:41 PM

I like "Street Fighting Man" and other favorite of mine is "2000 Man".

Dirty F 09-09-2004 05:41 PM

I can listen to Gimme Shelter every day.

SykkBoy 09-09-2004 05:41 PM

Paint It Black
probably my favorite guitar riff ever

chupachups 09-09-2004 05:42 PM

Gimme Shelter or Paint it black:thumbsup

WarChild 09-09-2004 05:45 PM

Paint It Black or Ruby Tuesday

infecto 09-09-2004 05:50 PM

Thats a hard question because they have so many classic songs. Paint it Black or Wild Horses

Arguing this is like arguing what beer is the best. There are a lot of fantastic ones, and what seems the best at the moment, will vary by the moment.

But I wonder if people listed their top twenty Stones tunes..... would more than a couple be past 1975?

VirtuMike 09-09-2004 06:27 PM

Sympathy for the Devil

Definitely a great song... one of the only Stones songs I have. I got it because DJ Icey uses it as a sample in one of his breakbeat songs. Wish I could find that Icey track... it's really good.

BrainDead 09-09-2004 06:33 PM

there are many to choose from... sometimes it depends on my mood but hey paint it black never fails yet so...

Drake 09-09-2004 06:38 PM

So many great ones it's hard to choose. So I'll go with one less played but still kicks: "She's my little rock n roll"

Sympathy for the Devil is my favorite by them. It was redone by Guns 'N Roses, and that version kicks serious ass, too! Damn I need to hear that song now!

:thumbsup

My favorite is

You Can't Always Get What You Want

I saw her today at a reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need

Oh yeah, hey hey hey, oh...

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
Sing it to me now...

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need
Oh baby, yeah, yeah!

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him

You can't always get what you want, no!
You can't always get what you want (tell ya baby)
You can't always get what you want (no)
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
Oh yes! Woo!

You get what you need--yeah, oh baby!
Oh yeah!

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

You can't always get what you want (no, no baby)
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need, ah yes...

I might have a tune or two from Some Girls ('78) on my top twenty but nothing after that.

More favs-

Crazy Mama
Midnight Rambler
Happy
Starfucker
Hand of Fate

'Can't you hear me knockin' is my personal favorite, greatest guitar riff ever. Other people will think Honky Tonk Woman' is the greatest guitar riff ever.

Either way, Keith Richards is a bad motherfucker. His solo album sounded much more like vintage Stones that Mick Jaggers did.

huey 09-09-2004 07:43 PM

Can't you here me Knockin and Monkey Man tie.

neewwman 09-09-2004 08:05 PM

I don't care for the Rolling Stones too much but I love "Shattered"

All this chitter - chatter, chitter - chatter, chitter - chatter 'bout
Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta - I can't give it away on 7th Avenue
This town's been wearing tatters
Work and work for love and sex
Ain't you hungry for success, success, success, success
Does it matter? Does it matter?
I'm shattered.

garce 09-09-2004 08:08 PM

I played guitar in a Toronto area Stones cover band for about 16 years, and its impossible for me to choose a favourite.

Silver Train, Stray Cat Blues, Sister Morphine, Sweet Virginia - and that's just the "S's".

I'll choose Before They Make Me Run as my all-time favourite.

"Gonna find my way to heaven, `cause I did my time in hell
I wasn't looking too good but I was feeling real well "

I used to think Rocks Off was their best song, but I now prefer Can't You Hear Me Knockin'. Too bad they left out the endless jam after the 3 minutes of heaven.

media 09-10-2004 04:43 PM

Can't you hear me knockin!

Angie, Wild Horses and You Can't Always Get What You Want

There's no way to pick their best song. Here's a couple of my favs:

Mother's little helper

Midnight Rambler

jayeff 09-10-2004 06:15 PM

Lot's of great songs, but Sympathy for the Devil is the one that stands way out in front...
