My advice for today to my fellow webmasters...
Webmasters:
You should keep all your shit backed up on your hard drives. Get out of the habit of deleting pages off your computer once you upload, a habit which I know a lot of you have. It's a bad habit. Bad. Stop it. I don't know how many people I've seen over the years complain about how all their galleries were lost etc because of server problems or hosting disputes etc. None of this can ever affect me, because I have every page I ever designed backed up on my hard drive, much of the older stuff on CD's. But all of my current websites are mirrored perfectly on my computer. If one of my hosts suddenly goes out of business or whatever, I am able to simply upload my site or sites to another server, switch the DNS codes and in a day or three I'm back in the game 100%. Stop deleting files once you upload. Don't argue, don't think you know better, just listen to me. I know. Thank you. Or rather, you should thank me. |
i've been burned once before on not backing things up. now i do it every week at least, more if something is crucial.

I have all my shit on my HD and some CDs also as a backup...
|
i have 2 external hard drives, everything gets backed up on one of them...i have everything since I started this shit
|
I download a full server backup every 2 weeks.
|
When you fire up your FTP program, on the right should be all your files & folders of your website on the server...
and on the left should be: all your files & folders of your website on your hard drive. Both sides should mirror each other perfectly. If you don't have it like this, you are doing it wrong. |
I have a clone of every server and keep tar files on all my website data just in case one of my many automated shitbird processes eats everything in some catastrophic error.
|
I always keep everything on harddrive.......and some important shit on cd.....
|
I don't have this habit
I keep my shit on my hard drive, and once in a while I even back it up on cd's :1orglaugh |

Glad to see there are a few of you guys who won't be complaining about some host who nuked you and now you've lost all your galleries and sites. Backups mean it can't happen to you. If the hard drive crashes and burns, you get a new one, then download all your sites back to your C drive. If your server craps out, you find a new host and upload your sites. Having current backups on CD's or DVD's means you are doubly protected. |
Even better buy an external hard drive and mirror your sites that way. You can get a good 160-200 gig drive for under 300$ This way even a mess up in winblows or some local hardware issue will not keep you out of the game.
We actulay keep 2 backups just in case. |
