Are you getting tired of politcal discussions that end up...

.....with people simply insulting anyone that disagrees? It seems as if anyone that doesn't agree with a point of view is a "sheep", ignorant, moron, or shouldn't be allowed to vote. The condescending tone that tends to set in is simply puerile.

Worse yet is when people are called "evil" for not agreeing on what is the best course for the country.

What the heck is that? Do you people honestly think that someone who disagrees is automatically stupid and evil? Is this your idea of the free exchange of ideas?

I have to admit that I have found this to be particularly prevalent on the left....somehow freedom of speech is ok....as long as you agree. If you don't, then you are an evil moron/sheep. (baa baa).

Having said that, I've seen it coming from the right as well.

Is this what you think constitutes political discussion?

Apparently so, on this board.

...and this is why I've decided to limit my political discussions from now on to mature adults who study the issues and can make a point in a debate without childish labels and insults.

Whether you want to believe it or not, 99.9999% of people all want the best for the country....they just disagree on the best way to get there.

Hey Michael...
You are 100% right in what you said:

"Whether you want to believe it or not, 99.9999% of people all want the best for the country....they just disagree on the best way to get there."

Well put man!!

Sly_RJ 09-09-2004 12:37 PM

The other day a friend of mine found out which party I usually side with, his reply: I feel sorry for you.

Haha, very open minded person. Right.

Peaches 09-09-2004 12:39 PM

Michael and Matthew are both ignorant moronic sheep.

Unless they agree with my views, of course. :thumbsup

I'm trying to stay out of political debates as they NEVER change anyone's mind.

OK, I'm going to have to disagree here. :winkwink: I think 99.99999% of the people want what's best for THEM, not necessarily anyone else in their country.

Azure Sales 09-09-2004 12:40 PM

Funny I just posted a rant on another board.

Did we all forget one the US founding ideas was freedom of speech.

You don't have to agree with me
You don't have to even listen to me

But I have the right to say what I think, feel, etc.

:2 cents:

As do you .... but then I don't have to agree or even listen

That doesn't make me a bad or evil person........

Ahhh I love being an adult!!

Correct.

People don't care about their country. They don't care about Joe Blow. They care about themselves and the people they love. I don't blame them really. Sometimes all you can do is fend for yourself and hope for the best.

alexg 09-09-2004 12:42 PM

you have a point, but democracy is all about open discussions and arguments... of course comments like "moron" and racial comments are the red line, but it shouldn't be taken too seriously considering it's just an online message board...

<IMX> 09-09-2004 12:45 PM

NO.

I know I'm not chained to the desk forced to repsond to threads.

True, but that's my point, and that's why I'm not going to get into debates on a board where people act so silly. I will talk about anything else around here, but....

I know what you are saying, but I don't think that the number is quite as high as you think. I've lived all over the world and I have a deep love for my country, I served in the military, in combat, and I DO care about the country. I think that more people do than you give them credit for.

Having said that, there are plenty that think as you say....:(

I couldn't agree more. The beauty of this country, or any democracy, is the right to voice your political opinion without the fear of being lambasted. This election year is particularly polarized as noticed in this article... http://theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4036

I agree with everything you said. Very well put, especially this statement. It's amazing to me the amount of people who espouse so much political philosophy around here who can't even put together a coherent English sentence, don't have the slightest grasp or understanding of history, and can only spew out propaganda, talking points, and endless rhetoric. Then, when called to task for it, the name calling begins as you said. I wonder how far Kerry or Bush would go if in a rebuttal during a debate they said, "Oh yeah, well you're just a sheep, you moron." It's just ridiculous and a waste of time.

Yeah, you're right - I was being harsh :) It's probably really closer to 80%.

OK, so for now you're not an idiotic moron sheep :winkwink:

Actually, they do just that. Watch a debate sometime and count how many times an individual will respond by starting out with words such as, "What my opponent fails to realize is . . . " That's just a passive way of saying "My fuckin retarded opponent is such a sheep that he has completely ignored the fact that . . . "

I have to disagree with you here. The whole point is that they DON'T use the kind of emotionally charged schoolyard language that you are describing.

you're a damn brainwashed sheep. Everybody knows conservatives try to shut people up, lie, distort and mislead. Liberals engage in a fair and open exchange of ideas.

You little furry animals all look the same to me! :)

Interesting off topic - I have a LOT of chipmonks in my yard and watched one climb about 30 feet up a tree the other day! I see the squirrels do it all the time, but I've not ever seen the chips do it! You train your brethen well! :)

The majority of the military are conservatives. You liberals are going to have a heck of a time taking care of yourselves when you ship most of the military out. Remember, they DO participate in other things besides fighting wars. :thumbsup

Hmm...

What's this thread about?

Q. Is political conversation any more intelligent on GFY than anywhere else?

A. No.

Q. Is there is any greater evidence in American society TODAY that we can objectively consider governmental policies, actions and legislation beyond its immediate impact to OURSELVES?

A. No.

Q. Do intelligence, rationality and logic disappear from a debate whenever the emotional stakes are sufficiently high for one or more of the participants.

A. Yes.

People, there's a reason for the aphorism "Never talk politics or religion with strangers." I would amend that to "Never talk politics or religion with people whom you can't (for reasons of distance or remoteness) fuck or kill.
