How do they do it and how do we prevent it?

registrar lock to stop it.

not gonna tell you here how it's done. but it's pretty simple. a 19 year old transfered ebay.de to another ISP for a couple of hours last week. did it with a simple email to denic.

I knew there was a locked status but I didn't know what it was for.

Just wanted to post to reiterate that if you value your business take the time to lock your domain and it will save you a lot of time and trouble...
