Strife 09-06-2004 04:01 PM

Fine, let him prove it. Full open medical screening for performance enhancing drugs, then additional samples kept on ice for future testing when the testing machines are better.

What's sad is he kept saying that next year would be his last year regardless. You know he'll have at least 740 by the end of next year (probably more) - but could you really see him stopping there? I don't think so. :2 cents:

69pornlinks 09-06-2004 04:04 PM

he'll beat ruth but will retire before henry, why becasuce ruth is 'mr. baseball' even though i know noone who saw him play...haha:)

Yeah, but I could go on and on about how playing way back was alot harder for batters.

sickkittens 09-06-2004 04:05 PM

Oh yeah, and Babe Ruth picthed for 5 full seasons at the beginning of his career. (He barely batted)

And he was a fine pitcher at that.

freeadultcontent 09-06-2004 04:07 PM

and he occassionally played sloshed.

sickkittens 09-06-2004 04:19 PM

Did you hear about Bonds "calling his shot" yesterday? Complete bullshit.

pxxx 09-06-2004 04:20 PM

A bunch of fucking haters in this thread.

Maybe he is not Ruth, but give him some credit. Records are meant to be broken, and that is what makes any record great. The fact that people will try so hard over their careers just to break it, and most fail. So when you get that one person that actually has a chance to succeed, it is something special, and should be admired. He is getting trashed in this thread like he used a hack code for everything he has done in baseball. That is just not right if you ask me, and i want hime to break it and HOPE that he breaks it. Give the game of Baseball the next big THING.

Yeah, but there should be an asterisk next to his total. :2 cents:

<IMX> 09-06-2004 06:09 PM

ruth played with a ton of bullshit players. MLB teams got their asses kicked by non-MLB teams all the time...keep that in mind.

Those "old school" records don't always represent the best players ;)

Yes I want to see Barry break the record so I can unload these two 86 Topps Traded cases I've been sitting on for quite some time.

No expansion, large parks, no juiced balls, no roids. Check out the ERA's and home run totals back then. not to mention how they traveled. Guys now adays complain about the smallest things. :2 cents:

I just don't think you can say he's anywhere near as good as Ruth, that's all.

<IMX> 09-06-2004 07:33 PM

Barry Bonds would kick Ruth's ass. Not much more to it. The comparison is based on nostaglia not much more.

MLB is now a game of finely tuned athletes that includes the best the world has to offer (japanese, black americans, s. americans etc.) not just white males.

Sorry not much comparison.

:1orglaugh

Finely tuned? Look at the size of rosters now and some of the pitching talent that comes up from the minors.

Did I mention that Ruth also was a pitcher during the beginning of his career. He'd have around 1,000 homers if not for that.

ChrisExtreme 09-06-2004 08:39 PM

Nope, but its gonna happen anyway!

<IMX> 09-06-2004 09:00 PM

As I said, that was back in the day with a very limited talent pool. Ruth was in at the majors at 19. That would be pretty difficult for even the best of players today.

As for the players, back then they cheated like mad as well with dirt, licorice and tobacco juice
and anything else they coulod get their hands on.
(same as today lol)

The other important part is nostalgia. Ppl love the "legend" of Ruth.

Sorry, but the overall level of the game is faster and generally better. In addition the skill set of the average player has increased as well as their strength and dimensions, and the overall diversity has brought more people to the game (its wordlwide now). For instance, that imposing 6'2" 215 frame of Ruth's is now much more common place.

It is a very very different game now, along with many other sports.

Goatse 09-07-2004 07:07 AM

I'd rather see Ichiro Suzuki beat Geroge Sisler's record of 257 hits in a season. He has a great shot at it.

Doctor Dre 09-07-2004 07:41 AM

Yea but no1 want to pitch to him any fucking way ... won't happen

Agreed.

But even if Bonds breaks Ruth's record, it still won't be valid in my mind (probably like a lot of you). Ruth is a legend. The greatest the game has seen. He didn't do steroids, played in the dead ball era, hit against some of the game's best pitchers ever, and was probably the most loved man in America at the time (try saying that about Bonds...hell, his own teammates hate him!). Bonds is the posterboy for greed, arrogance, selfishness, and juiced up baseball. Everything the game is today.

Giorgio_Xo 09-07-2004 07:54 AM

Yes. He is the greatest player of the second half of the 20th Century.

Ruth played coked up. Pitchers were shit back then. A good fastball was 85 MPH. Fielders weren't in as good of shape to chase down balls.
