It's my birthday! Help me pick out a digital camera for my present to myself :)

I've been having too many, "Damn, wish I had a camera" moments lately, so I need to take care of that. Would appreciate any recommendations for a camera that will meet my needs:

Camera is not going to be used for content, so I don't need high-end professional gear. It will be primarily a personal use camera, however I want quality to occasionally take shots to be used on webpages, so I don't want a low end point-and-click.

5 megapixels minimum, I want to be able to make an occasional 8x10. I'd also like to be able to record at least TV quality video with sound, time only limited by size of memory stick.

Small is not an advantage. I have big clumsy hands. In fact, I have been considering a digital/SLR hybrid so I can use interchangable lenses, but interchangable lenses aren't a necessity if the camera has decent zoom and macro. Shutter speed is tremendously important. I have taken back 2 cameras that take the shot a half second after you release the button. I can't kept those steady enough to take a clear shot.

Budget is $1k. (This should include a lens if I go the digital/SLR route)

If you have a camera that fits these criteria please tell me your experience with them, from quality of pics to user-friendliness. Thanks!

You can get an excellent price on the Nikon5700 right now or if you want a little more horsepower go with the Nikon8700. Both are extremely good quality cameras for the money. If interchangeable lenses are a must, cough up another grand and go for the D series. Anyway, I use the 5700 a lot and I can not say enough good things about it. Excellent value for the money.

I have also been facing some of those situations lately where I wish that I had a camera along with me.

So thanks for that bit about the ones that you are using.

if your budget is 1k$, go with the Canon Digital Rebel

*you don't need 5 megapixels to print occasional 8x10 :winkwink:

I bought a Canon Powershot S230 Elph a long while back and still love it. One of the newer models in the same series would probably make you very happy.

I have to agree with the suggestions for the Rebel. It's a great camera and fits right in your price range.

You don't need to spend alot of money.

This camera costs about $300 and took this picture and can do short movies too. It's so clear, you can see the Alabama red mud stain in the shin of my jeans and the reflection of the picture taker in the chrome covers......

My old still film camera was a Canon, I had years of fun with it. This one looks good, but I don't see any video capability. I'll put the rebel in my consider folder.

Those are very nice. That's a 4 mp camera? I might not be so rigid on 5 mp minimum:)

How is the video clip capability? Is there any time restriction?

That is the camera I was originally looking at. I like that it says TV quality video and you are only limited by the size of the memory stick. I'll only need the video for occasional home movies, otherwise I'd shop for a video camera separately later. Pic quality is more important than video quality. Does the EasyShare do macro?

Raf1 09-06-2004 02:17 PM

happy birthday. Canon EOS 300D is a great camera and you can get it for around that price

Specs look nice on that... how tiny is it?
I'm a little leery of Sony, I killed 2 of their handycams.:)
