VIRUS HEADS UP !!!

WHAT A FREAKING MESS !!!!
I just got back online after a complete re-formatting of my harddrive ... My computer was infected with the W95.MTX virus ... so this message is a HEADS UP to anybody who may have sent Email to me, or received Email from me in the past few days!

W95.MTX is is a VERY stubborn virus, and remains pretty much invisable until it has corrupted any number of EXE files on your computer!!

I still have no idea WHO sent it to me, but as this is the SECOND time I have had it ... I can tell you that whoever sent it to me, may not even know they did, as I do not know when I got infected, it would be wise for ANYBODY who corresponded with me by Email recently, to scan their PC (Macs are not affected by W95.MTX).

If you do not have a good virus scan software, there is a very good online scanner at www.antivirus.com

Also, because I had to reformat, I lost ALL my Emails too, so anybody who had contacted me about the $500 site tour deal, please send me another email .. thanx =)

http://www.symantec.com is the best online scanner and it also has a repair file, free online for that virus. I believe they have a standalone scanner for that one as well. Or they did awhile back.

Thanks for the info Gemini ... although too late now ... I am sure there will be a next time http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/frown.gif

I got a copy of Norton 2001 from a friend, but wasn't aware they had a free online scanner ...

Their scanner is abit slow online but its the most comprehensive available. Its well worth going just to read their virus area. Its huge Hungryman. They also post all the hoaxes and fixes quicker than any other site and they 99% of the time work great

Norton Systemworks is well worth the cost. The speedisk will defrag 20 times or more faster than MS defrag. Lots of goodies in that bundle!

If you have $500 around, buy one of those cheap-o "internet ready" computers for e-mail use. It's cheaper than losing data.

... or learn how to use Linux

Knocking on wood, we have kept our Norton updated since 1996 and so far not one virus has gotten thru. It stops the email the sec it determines there is a virus which is almost immediately and asks what to do! We tried McAffeee and others but none managed to do that. Updating is the thing you have to remember. So we set it to request an update weekly http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

I use PC-cillin and it updates daily (the scan engine and the virus pattern). So far it's blocked everyhing 'evil' 100%. I have a question though: Do these virus protection programs use a central "pool" for the viruses? I would think such an arangement would benefit all of these software makers while still leaving room for competition in the engine/interface department.

Just curious.

Hey DA :
From what I understand, 90% of the virus defense companies rely on SYMANTEC (Norton)
as their virus database ... Norton was around when the first PC virus was discovered, and was the company who did all the legwork for the cure to the same ...

To paraphrase ... Norton is to virus protection, what Adobe is to computer graphic design. Their merge with Symantec, allowed Norton to have the financial support of perhaps the worlds's single best software company, strengthening their position as the worlds's premier virus protection software.
