quitting smoking?

I have been debating quiting for quite awhile now.
I'm still young, and have been smoked for quite a few years.
I go through 1.5 packs a day, but I feel myself edging towards 2 :(

I feel very unhealthy, I am out of breath, I can barely walk around my house without loosing my breath :( Well, this is due to my weight as well, but that is next on my list of changing my lifestyle.

I have tried quitting before to no avail, mainly because I have been smoking for years now, and it is a habit to be on the computer smoking, pick up the phone - pick up a smoke, etc..

Anyone here have any advice/success stories?
I appreciate all comments, suggestions. Thanks :thumbsup

I've been off them damn cigs for 9 years now! Took me several tries, like six or seven to finally kick it. I tried the gum...that didn't work. Then I got the patch and duct taped it to my arm! :1orglaugh It's also mind over matter.

My brother in law's cousin tried with the gum too and continued to smoke. NOw his teeth are shot because of so much nicotine gum and cig smoke at same time.
You must get your mind right to do it.
Good luck.:thumbsup

I quit smoking about 5 months ago I believe, I feel great.. you should just go for it.. but you gotta be ready.. you sound about where I was at before I got a massive throat infection and started hacking up blood clots..

johnbosh 09-03-2004 01:05 AM

That sounds like a good incentive

best way to quit smoking is, hittup the gym... lose the weight first.. then you'll relise that you cant smoke and go to the gym after smoking.. so you'll stop smoking... start eating healthier.. or just not your normal eatin patterns. ie. if you normally have a smoke after you have a burger.. dont eat burgers and then you wont associate the food you eat with smoking....

thats what i did...and it worked for me... I smoked 3-4 packs a week for 3years... i havnt had a weight problem(im 6'3'', use to be 220lb.. now i'm just over 200lb) but I was out of shape and always out of breathe.

when ever you feel like a cig, take a deep breath and relise how much bigger your lung capacity it is... its always enough to stop me from the cravings.

One of the most important keys in quitting a bad habit is fully realising there is no way ahead of you if you keep on going. Most people who smoke are misinformed. Yes they know how bad it is for health and sometimes they feel bad, but they don't realise this to its fullest extend. Public health informations focus on lung cancer, but this is by far not the most important effect of smoking. Virtually every disease is in some way linked to smoking. Smokers are more prone to airway infections. Smokers have increased risk of heart-and-vessel diseases. And not just slightly increased - but: like 10 times. Virtually every smoker suffers from COPD, a blend of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Even bladder cancer is largely linked to smoking. Look it up if you're interested in learning more, this board has little room for extensive explanations.

So, if you really realise what you need to do, you can do it. Cold turkey.

Yeah, I just went through a tour provided by the Surgeon General. It is very scary :(
It seems cold-turkey is the only way to go...

I think so too, although I've never smoked nor quitted. A few close friends have done it too and it worked for them. I think when using all kinds of medical aid, you're basically fooling yourself. You're the one in charge of your body, take that responsibility. Good luck!

diseases like COPD virtually don't exist under non-smokers. Take a look at the lung diseases department of your nearest hospital and try to find a non-smoker. They're not there!

Do the same at cardiology and you'll find out the same. Smoking is really bad.

Quitnet is a great tool to help you quit.....It's free and it really really does help. After smoking for 20+ years and many many tries at quitting, it is the one thing that helped me quit. You should check it out....

Look when I quit smoking several years ago I felt like someone was taking away my air to breathe. But I'm not a fucking animal and know that I don't need smoke to survive. You need to quit being a pussy to yourself. Take the pain like a man and stop right now or I'll come over and whop your ass.

i've been a smoker for about 8 yrs now (im 23 yrs old), and i smoke a pack a day.

i've been struggling with stopping as well. i almost stopped earlier this year. i just woke up, couldnt breath and looked at my smokes and threw them in the trash, washed all the ashtrays in the house and put them away in a box in the closet.

then i started to chew gum, suck on a lollypop, eat pretzels or popcorn (to substitue the hand-to-mouth pattern without gaining weight).

25 hours passed and i was goin strong! then, i got into a big fight with the Mr., took the truck and drove around angry, got a phone call about a family member that had a stroke, and ironically, stopped in the parking lot of a grocery store that was still open, i was crying so i needed to pull over, and just happen to land there.

bad mistake. i went into the store for more gum cuz i ran out. and walked out with a pack of smokes. :( i didnt lite up at first. but when i got home, i did.

this saturday, i start working out at the gym again, and when im working out, i physcially cant breath if im still smoking more than 2 cigs a day. so im hoping that will kick the habit for good!!

i heard nicotene leaves the body after 3 days of not having any. so, thats my goal.....3 days. if i can make 3 days, i can make it!!!! :thumbsup

Right.
Physically you don't need cigarette three days after you quited.

But there is a psychological adaptation.
You used to smoke while you drink a coffee, waiting for somebody etc. And when you quit, it's terrible do not smoke in such situations.
