Camping in the Las Vegas area

I'm probably going camping this weekend or early next week but I'm not sure where I want to go. Right now Mt. Charleston is looking most likely but I am open to suggestions. I'm going to drag along my camera, tripod, 1000mm zoom and so on, so it has to be pretty.

Also, what are the best sporting goods stores around here?

Thanks,
SpaceAce

Mt Charleston has some good areas...and right now it's quite nice up there during the day but I suggest you take something for the cool evenings.

There are plenty of Big 5's in town..don't really know of anything else.

I went to Red Rock Sunday. Thumbs-up :thumbsup

The camping area was closed, though. At least the one I saw.

Cold is no problem for me. Mostly, I want scenery.

Not sure how far you want to drive but Zion National Park and Bryce Cayon in Utah are pretty scenic

I'm trying to keep it to a couple hours or less drive time because I have a friend flying in Thursday night and if I decide to stay through Thursday I don't want to have a big rush getting back.

this is the last holiday weekend of summer. If I were you, I would avoid the crowds and go camping next weekend.

Yeah, that's why I was thinking of going early next week instead. Maybe Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.

I know there are more places than just Mt. Charleston. Anyone have another suggestion?

I think mt charleston is a little overrated. yes, its beutiful up there, but thats where EVERYBODY goes. See if there is something in the logandale trail system. Its on the edge of the valley of fire and the desert landscape there is amazing.

Valley of Fire is nice and was ranked in a major photography magazine as one of the top ten places in US to shoot models.

Zion is about 158 miles from vegas so about a 2 1/2 hour drive but a lot to do and see there

Wow, that looks really nice. If I can drive two hours, I can drive 2 1/2. I'll keep that one on the list.
