I wasn't aware there was a country called "European Union." Looks like another intelligent post by DorkJedi.

Not much different then Americans with 10x the population of Canada crowing to Canadians because they got 10x as many medals. :1orglaugh

20 years from now the world will most likely be dominated by the EU and China.. unless something major happens.

national anthem of the EU: Beethoven's Ode to Joy
capital: Brussels

Sarah_Jayne 08-31-2004 10:52 AM

oh and if we can do that why can't the UK claim every country in the Commonwealth. So, we get to have Australia's medals too. It just gets better!

But I don't think we had representatives from all 50 states? How many total Olympicans did the US have? How many total Olymians did the EU group have?

A state and country are words that can be intermixed depending on the situation. All country's are states but not all states are countries.

But his other point is till stupid.

Most olympic sports now have zonal qualifiers---countries can't just send their national teams as in the past.

Michael O 08-31-2004 10:58 AM

Did you see what Romano Prodi said? He hoped that the athletes from the EU countries would use both their own flag and the EU flag in Beijing.

Even if you included all of North America (Canada, US, and Mexico), they still would not have got more medals than Europe, and on a per capita basis it wouldn't even be in the top 20

There are 25 COUNTRIES in the EU... find out how many states in each country and add them up and come back to make an intelligent post.

BRISK 08-31-2004 11:02 AM

Per capita medals:

US: 1 medal for every 2.84 million people

Canada: 1 medal for every 2.7 million people

EU: 1 medal for every 1.625 million people

Australia: 1 medal for every 408,000 people

Yes. This is the anthem not only of the European Union but also of Europe in a wider sense. The melody comes from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven.

yeah i heard that but it won't happen. Hell, the Sun's Editor's head would explode first. I mean, the UK won't even enter a team into the footie because it would mean they wouldn't be able to have seperate England, Scotland, and Wales teams in the World Cup. So, can you see it happening across the whole EU?

Theo 08-31-2004 11:05 AM

let's get the statistics of black atheletes over white athletes for states now :-)
