Any Capoeira Practiniars here?

Growing up with my dad who runs three karate school I have been surrounded by martial arts my whole life.

I saw a few movies with this Brazilian martial art in it and I thought it was OK. Nothing to special really.

But I saw a demo on Saturday in the street and I was completely blowed away. I loved how it combined dance, drumming, music, acrobatics, and martial arts into one style. It was simply beautiful to watch. The drumming was so powerfull you could feel agaisnt your chest.

I would love to take lessons.

Anyone do it here?
:thumbsup

Capoeira is beautiful

Anthony_A 08-30-2004 01:32 PM

Capoiera is beautiful, no doubt.

But... Do you want to learn how to dance, or how to fight?

http://www.bjj.org

Grandmestre Helio Gracie is about the same size as you are, and he beat guys my size in Vale Tudo back in the day.

Plus, chicks dig submission fighters. :)

I agree with Anthony, it's more of a dancing art. Then martial arts.

I used to know a friend in highschool that did it. The history behind Capoeira is really interesting as well.

But as for myself, all I know is how to use Eddy Gordo in Tekken 3

:Graucho

ytcracker 08-30-2004 05:56 PM

eddy gordo and the chick who fights like him is all the cap i know

fr8 08-30-2004 06:08 PM

The movie Only the Strong had alot of that style of fighting in it.

dig420 08-30-2004 06:53 PM

Every martial art is as effective as the person who is using it.

AkiraSS 08-30-2004 07:02 PM

Capoeira is very cool discipline,

Have you watched the movie btw?

Pitty nobody teaches it over here...

Also, can you start at the age of 22 ?

yeah that's why there's so many Kung-Fu and TKD guys in NHB. They all suck.

Invariably, people who know about martial arts and don't know BJJ fucks up everything else with great ease turn out to be Bruce Lee fanatics, Shaolin monks or Ninjas.

Must be be nice living in a world with purple skies and lollipop trees :1orglaugh

monica 08-30-2004 10:07 PM

Not everyone takes a martial art to learn to kick ass in the ring, so there's nothing wrong with someone wanting to take capoeira.

However, I prefer to learn how to kick serious ass... MMA and BJJ all the way!

exposed 08-30-2004 10:09 PM

word, ive seen some movie clips floating around some crazy ass shit

You can use whatever you want.

I'll give you the option of what I'll use.

BJJ, MT, or Judo. Or I can go MMA and use all three if you want. :)

There will be no using of the womanly charms while I am in your guard, or when you have mount...

the funny thing about martial arts is i have rarely seen anyone schooled in them fair very well against someone who happens to enjoy a good scrap.

i have seen many experts in their fields get knocked the fuck out, just by tangling with some country boys who really like to get into it. The trouble is, with real life is you rarely get to choose the start of the "fight" unlike staged or ring fighting

word of advice when dealing with country boys or people from way up north is....they swing first and hard, long before you are even certain you will be in a fight. so be wary

i dont care who you think you are, if you get popped in the face by a 200lb male who knows how to throw a punch it is game over.

Nope . Karate and Russian Martial arts here :thumbsup

DWB 08-31-2004 11:47 AM

I took some classes in Sao Paulo last December and FUCK is that shit hard. Mad respect to the guys that can do that well.

Don't let people slam it calling it a dance... those guys will FUCK YOU UP. There are 2 forms really, a traditional one and a more modern and gymnastic one (what you see on TV).

Little known fact: The creators of this sometimes used razor blades when they battled and would cut a man to pieces. :helpme

Dwreck 08-31-2004 11:52 AM

I do it for the art, the physical part, to learn somethng new.

Im not out to fight anyone or kick any asses.

I dont care who you are. ONE SHOT YOUR DEAD!!

Odie, in all seriousness... There's a saying in BJJ, with experience level the same, for every 20lbs you give up, go up one belt.

2 of you still wouldn't equal one of me. Let alone my mad grappling skills!

When you get mount, be prepared for alot of Upa that won't necessarily work in the way it was intended.

:winkwink:

werd..I've never left a martial arts class and hurt for the next 2 weeks..the core strength and physical abilities required are insane.

p.s. Anthony_A, I really could care less if you could beat me or not. I took up martial arts to learn to defend myself and to learn how to focus my energy in a positive way both mind and body.
I didn't take it up so that I could challenge people and beat the shit out of them.

Thank god I wasn't born with a penis.:thumbsup
