San Diego street scene a disaster IMO

was a catastrophe. They could not have screwed that up any worse had they tried. Making it all ages really did not work.

The bands were great. Jack Johnson, Tribe and Ben Harper were fantastic but the venue was so poorly ran!

If you were there, then you know what I am talking about!

-Cell phones did not work.
-Beer garden was too small, long line to enter, long long line to get a beer.
-bathrooms were not in the beer garden, line to get out, line for the porta potties.
-long line to enter the venue.
-long line to enter the individual stages.
-no alcohol allowed in the concert areas.
-No one had any idea who, where in regards to bands playing.

In short, if you were there, all you saw was a mass amount of people walking clueless trying to dial out on their cell phones and looking for the exit!

pxxx 08-29-2004 10:50 PM

I wasn't there but it sounds like a huge mess.

wtfent 08-29-2004 10:52 PM

As soon as I found out it was all ages I said f#ck it. I'll just wait for mardi Gras. :winkwink:

cherrylula 08-29-2004 10:55 PM

Outdoor festivals are all like that. Beer lines too long, bathroom lines too long, etc.

I can't go to those things anymore because I absolutely cannot stand being herded around like an animal in a pack of dirty hippies and drunk frat boys.

foolio 08-29-2004 11:06 PM

I think making it all ages was the biggest fuckup they could have possibly made. Look what happened on the first night - thise people got trampled - and who was most of it? the underage kids.

But other than that I think they did the best with what they had. All the areas they have had it in the past are all gone and they were basically forced to go in that small ass area and cut the wide range of bands that really made the event what it was (or in this case supposed to be).

We can always hope for better luck next year - lets hope they learned that letting the underage kids in was a major fuckup.

baddog 08-29-2004 11:09 PM

why wouldn't cell phones work?

Doctor Dre 08-29-2004 11:16 PM

This ALWAYS happen ... even in a paked bar budy ... get used to it

Phones don't work in big tents when we do huge events because of the metal structure . I dunno about this one thought ... but big metal structures are some major problems with cell phones

I was under the impression this was an outdoor event

Poppy 08-30-2004 02:22 AM

Moving the venue literally to the Petco Parking lot was a BIG mistake. The kewl thing about Street Scene in years past was that it was in the Gaslamp District, where all the bars are.

The network can be overwhelmed if there's tons and tons of cellphones in a small area. Happens in finnish outdoors festivals as well.

xxxjay 08-30-2004 03:19 AM

Damn - that sux Corey, maybe I was lucky Paycom crashed on Saturday...lol

shermo 08-30-2004 03:35 AM

And you invited me to go with you to a disaster? Heesh! Thanks a lot. :1orglaugh

Hopefully it'll get better next year and I can join you all. :thumbsup

reynold 08-30-2004 03:45 AM

Firehorse 08-30-2004 08:44 AM

That sounds like a clusterfuck. :2 cents:

It had decent moments, but only when you were away from the concert. I ran into Mark, he was sitting on a curb trying to make a call :1orglaugh

LOL

Who would have thought?

BTW, cell phones did not work because the network was overwhelmed with people trying to find their friends.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

Atlanta has an all ages outdoor concert festival every year that works well:

http://www.musicmidtown.com/

Yes, there are crowds, lines and some complaints but the vast majority of goers have a great time :)

Kids did not belong at the venue in San Diego for many different reasons. Period.

Other venues are designed for it. Probably the one you cited is such an example.

True, however, in this case it was aggravated by the fact that EVERY time you entered a "21+" area, you were forced to reproduce your ID. This caused MASS backup into the beer garden, which was then aggravated by RIDICULOUS lines and poorly planned logistics of actually getting an drink.

Not to mention that the beer gardens did not have good visual site to any of the stages.

I was VERY disappointed.

Btw, Cory...glad you made it home.
I'm sure the Hyatt was an inviting site. ;)
Glad we got to hang out.

To this point, the SAFETY of kids at this venue actually concerns me more than any of the issues surrounding the long lines and inconveniences of the event.

When walking towards the Jack Johnson stage, our group of 6 people (men AND women) were having to physically fight to not be run over by the people behind us.
There were a few times in those moments that I didn't feel safe.

I am CERTAIN this was not a place for young people.

TheGoldenChild 08-30-2004 09:32 AM

All Ages sucked ass-

The Alcohol area sucked ass.

The new Ballpark area was not the same as n years past....

No programs were made available to tell when your favorite groups were playing and at what stage.....

However,
TRIBE CALLED QUEST was the hottest show I have seen in years!

I don't think I'll go next year- I have been going every year since I moved to Diego- ( 8 years)
It's a real shame they had to commercialize and sell out this year to bring revenue to the ballpark district with underaged kids.

All I saw was young people drunk and throwing up all over downtown...

OH and the worst part for me?

I meet a hottie, get invited to her house...I leave the Street Scene only to realize I have no fucking clue where I parked my car...

2 hours later I hire a Sudanese cab driver who did NOT want to drive my ass around looking for my car-
Pay him $20 .....voila! I find my car a block away from where I was searching for it.

I forgot to mention those damn rum drinks I had when I was with Chandie and Gracie kicked my ASS...

Good seeing you kids ...even if though I lost ya during Tribe.

I think you forgot to mention the part where you actually stopped to inform the police that your car had been stolen.

It was the SUGAR, not the alcohol, babe. LOL
And, as always, GREAT seeing you, too.

The "straw" story still haunts my thoughts.
File that one under the category of "too much information" :helpme

I can't believe how many people were there. It was unreal. San Diego morning radio apparently condemned the event as well.

BTW, my phone is getting bashed with a hammer today.

i couldn't agree more cory.

i was heavily involved with street scene in the good old days, back before the haigeys got greedy and tried to make it the mega it is now.

it has gone downhill with no brakes for the past 2-3 years.

i didn't even go this year. last year was just as bad in my opinion, by the way you are describing it.

all they want is your money, thats brutally obvious every year. pretty soon, they will just ask you to send in your money and not attend. its so difficult to attend, would be more fun to stay home and just mail them their money. LMAO LMAO

Your phone was the WORST of them. :1orglaugh

The most frustrating thing about the cell phone issue
is that I ALWAYS had a signal...but NONE of you guys (friends/colleagues who attended) did.
Not extremely useful to have coverage when you can't call anyone.

When I got seperated at Jack Johnson (LOVE THAT MAN, BTW), I was certain I was on my own for the balance of the night.

Thank goodness you and Gracie found me.
And thank goodness for the tequila bar we found shortly thereafter. :thumbsup

man was I stupid.

You would have to burn those sheets before I ever step foot in your house...500 thread count or not. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

500 thread count SATEEN sheets baby.

Thank G-d my mom sent me a gift card to Linens and Things...
Don't think I'll tell her why I had to buy the sheets though.

Moose 08-30-2004 11:25 AM

It was horrible and a waste of money this year.
I will not be back if they keep it this way.

Big E 08-30-2004 12:16 PM

Yeah, but count on them doing it again next year..

2003 = 70,000 people over 3 days
2004 = 105,00 over 2 days

They obviously made a killing..

Floridiot 08-30-2004 12:18 PM

i never understood why people dont put porto pots in the beer gardens

seeric 08-30-2004 12:23 PM

not to mention that the hackjob 5$ an hour wanna be piggy securities that they hire every year treat you like total shit. imagine having to have like 6 artist badges all different colors and just short of requiring retina scans to get back stage. no one ever knows what is going on. for the money they make, they should be treating the public alot better. san diego relies on that festival to fill potholes and drive the economy, so they will never reform it. pretty soon you'll be paying 100 bucks to get shoved around and puked on by all the dirtballs that it attracts. i can't wait to read some of the nightmare "family" stories. i bet some kids saw some stuff that mommy and daddy hadn't expected this weekend.

koreanbbque 08-30-2004 12:27 PM

I only went there Saturday nite for some Jack Johnson...

That was a big mistake, the passage from the center stage to the bestbuy stage was a fucking disaster. I'm surpised when my group got to the other side no one was trampled.

Cops standing around, but they couldn't do shit against a mob of 20k in the span of 10ft x 10ft.

Yucks... that was my 4th and final street scene.

Ya - but they had no choice. All the places they really used are now construction zones. The Petco area is really the largest open area downtown that is left.

And please, never say "kwel" again :1orglaugh

ezrydn 08-30-2004 12:55 PM

I left San Diego last year. However, I swore off Street Scene after it's first occurance. And, after that, it just got worse. However, as mentioned, there's money in "worse." No joy, just money.

My personal favorite was the 2 porta potty setup right outside the Captain Morgan stage.

Lets see, 2 bathrooms, 100k+ people in that stage alone.....

Vanilla DeVille 08-30-2004 01:49 PM

Damn, that SUX... Sorry to hear that, babe.

laura 08-30-2004 01:50 PM

I called for a cab on friday night and waited for nearly 2 hours....it never showed so I made popcorn and watched Nip Tuck.

I guess I was lucky :)

Street Scene was always so cool when it was in the Gaslamp. When I heard it was only 3 stages and all ages I knew it was going to suck but I thought I would give it a shot. I am glad I didnt

This is EXACTLY the area that I was talking about.
Absolutely dangerous!

Police were standing on top of trashcan enclosures to stay out of the mess. They couldn't have responded or done anything in the event that people would have fallen.

People carrying small children were at an even greater disadvantage than the rest of us because they couldn't fend off the crazies pushing forward.

Next year I say we put a group
together (yep, Cory and Chopper, too!) and head for Atlanta. :thumbsup

Chopper would not have put up with all those people. He is not as cool as me about that stuff. He bites.

Laura, I heard several occurences of people not getting cabs. You should have called Poppy, apparently he and a bunch of friends took a gang Vespas up PCH to the show. He is crazy like that.

I felt sorry for those people in the Ticketmaster will call line. I would have demanded a refund.
