Has MTV Fucked Up The Production of Quality Classic Music?

Watching the MTV awards and its all the same old hip hop crap again. Granted a few of these artists turn out songs that us older guys can enjoy, but it seems like MTV over the past two decades has turned the music industry into more of a churn 'em out video factory and perfectly packaged artist operation.

The quality of music seemed to go downhill about the time MTV became so popular and videoized the music industry, where visuals became as important as the songs being recorded, and in many cases more important than the sound.

Agree?

BradM 08-29-2004 08:43 PM

MTV is shit. Bottom line, nothing further need be said.

Spunky 08-29-2004 08:43 PM

It just started here..lol they treat Shaq like some kind of hero there:1orglaugh

Lane 08-29-2004 08:44 PM

Music should be more about instruments i think. Played by talented people of course.

xenigo 08-29-2004 08:44 PM

Yes, I do agree that MTV has cheapened music as a whole. Today's generation of kids have warped perspectives on what constitutes a great production.

Yeah, MTV sucks. They've turned most 12-28 year olds into fucking tools.

pornstar2pac 08-29-2004 08:46 PM

I'm more of a VH-1 guy myself. and CMT

Yeh, I agree every aspect of it has become so over commercialized now.

Varius 08-29-2004 08:47 PM

MTV is basically for the 14-20 age group I'd say.

Some bands and artists they showcase do deserve the recognition; others would be one-hit wonders if they weren't played in every MTV music block and force-fed down viewers throats (see: Good Charlotte)

On a side note, WTF happened to the singer from Papa Roach?? He lost a TON of weight looks like....

KRL 08-29-2004 08:48 PM

Damn, Gwen Stefani from No Doubt looks hotter than ever.

:Graucho

tony286 08-29-2004 08:49 PM

THe moment music became a visual medium it started to go down hill.,

badmunchkin 08-29-2004 08:52 PM

I never liked hip hop honestly but it is so fucking played out now. Something new needs to come and bust through this endless crap that MTV pushes on people - there's no passion in music anymore.
The only halfway decent performance all night was Alicia Keys with Stevie Wonder. :2 cents:

Just like porn :)

Really though, I agree. I've been playing guitar and bass off and on for over 20 years. I used to play A LOT of shows. 3-4 times a week. Then I quit. Not that we weren't any good, we were okay. But none of us really wanted to do the tour and tour and tour and promote and promote and promote gig. Too much time away from family, that kind of thing. Now...tis a bit different. You can do A LOT of promotion from home, esp if you suck out and get some big company to use one of your tunes...

Am actually working on getting my home studio back into shape to lay more tracks, but I can almost certainly guarantee I won't be on mtv any time soon...

Giorgio_Xo 08-29-2004 08:53 PM

People stopped learning to play their instruments 15 years ago.

Well we have to blame that on the digitalization of music more than MTV.

I had a friend that had one of the first synthezisers to produce electronic loop based music and I was thinking this will make it all too easy for anyone to become a musician.

Slick 08-29-2004 08:55 PM

Fuse is where it's at nowadays, I LOVE that video channel.

As far as MTV2 goes, it's pretty bad when that channel starts putting non-video shows on it, isn't that why they created the channel, for VIDEOS ?

I wish that they still had MTVX, that channel was great, lots of good stuff without the rap and hip-hop.

dropped9 08-29-2004 08:55 PM

Its sad when even the rock bands suck.

Alicia and No Doubt are the only two I admired on the show.

Alicia is incredible. There should be more artists like her.

Exactly - you want the rock band to kick ass and show people what it's really about but they can't play for shit either.

Tom_PMs 08-29-2004 08:59 PM

I agree, KRL.

Music used to be about the um.... music.

Now it's about the "package". That sucks for music lovers.

I used to love going to the record store and buying some music. And music would become popular *because* it sold so well.

Nowadays it's earmarked for "success" before a single track is laid down, and it shows...

Screaming 08-29-2004 09:01 PM

it is one big see how much money i have ordeal, people go so that they can be seen in the most expensive clothes and jewlery

MrIzzz 08-29-2004 09:01 PM

the only way to hear true good music is to leave the house and go see it live:)

samba in brazil, techno in london, folk in turkey, etc....

fuck the videos and the top 40 playlists on radio

You're confused bro, there's no "real" hip hop on the VMA's just shitty pop hop.

Yeh, Jet's lead vocalist has definite talent.

benc 08-29-2004 09:02 PM

Way too much freestyling, and no choruses.

Its like Puffdaddy said to the stupid kids on the making the band show. You cant build a career on freestyling, you need a great chorus to have a hit song. Yet that coked up fool is dancing around while crap that breaks that rule is being played on stage.

robfantasy 08-29-2004 09:04 PM

KRL are you telling me you are not part of the Lil Jon fan club?!

hehe

Holly 08-29-2004 09:12 PM

Jesus, could Hoobastank have been any more off key??? :helpme

Rochard 08-29-2004 09:14 PM

I haven't watched MTV in years. Somewhere along the way they lost the music aspect of it. It used to videos and "music news" and then suddenly they had full tv shows.

Now all the stuff they have on doesn't appeal to me.

I think what you have here is a generation gap. I remember listening to Bruce Springsteen and my parents telling me it was crap.

Heh I noticed that too.....guess singing doesn't run in their family.....His older brother (from Incubus) can indeed sing live and sound great....

He and his younger brother (from Trapt) cannot sing for shit in person....:2 cents:

Dax 08-29-2004 09:16 PM

Every single post here tells me: If i dont like the music being played is not good.. " that's bullshit.. whatever u are saying now about music, they said about elvis and the beattles when they came out.. same shit all over.. will happen every time and for ever..

Hip Hop would not be where is at if it wasnt for all the young white males that consume it.. so there.. blame it on YOUR kids! :thumbsup And it is interesting how is becoming the most powerful style of music...

I myself prefer alternative spanish music.. and spanish ballads.. actually music in spanish.... but the awards were fun..

Maybe there was some monitor problems 'cuz even Chaka Khan was singing horribly off key when she first came onstage.

Nah I've seen them live.....they're almost as bad as Crazy Town's lead vocalist :warning (who I consider to be the worst live singer I've ever seen)

Drake 08-29-2004 09:28 PM

Agree. MTV is an over commercialized machine. "Music" is more of a product than actual music. They push groups in order to get one hit out of them and than you never hear of the group again because they weren't talen to begin with.

I don't listen to much of any new music anymore.

yea, I'm sure and that dude from Sugar Ray's quite lousy, too. But the singer from Hoobastank is not Brandon Boyd's brother BTW - just sounds like him.

kowntafit 08-29-2004 09:29 PM

I don't have MTV but I have seen how much metallica sold out on it. There is good music and there is commercialised music, they are rarely the same thing. :2 cents:

beemk 08-29-2004 09:31 PM

mtv has been shit for quite some time now

BRISK 08-29-2004 09:31 PM

MTV is a business, it does not matter if they promote any good music, all that matters is that they make $$$

pornstar2pac 08-29-2004 09:32 PM

could it be that everyone in this thread is getting older and it's time to change the channel up one to VH-1?

Drake 08-29-2004 09:33 PM

Mainstream hip hop and most new hip hop for that matterhas nothing new to offer. It's becoming boring. I think hip hop is at its end just like rock and metal before it. Everything has been done already.

"Alternative" rock died in the 90's with Nirvana and Alice In Chains and the heyday of great bands like Pearl Jam. New alternative rock sounds like garbage and is offers nothing new except noise and cheap cover versions of old songs.

it's not possible - we're all the ones who know what's really cool.

Don't you know that Frank Sinatra is "real" music? This Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis rock n' roll is just noise! :1orglaugh :winkwink:
