Which produces MORE BUSINESS --- Advertising or WORD OF MOUTH?

Any idea? I'm leaning towards the latter.

depends on the type of business . . . but my experience has been that in it's infancy you need advertising, eventually, if you are good, word of mouth will come.

Your goal is to get it where word of mouth is your best advertising

i think both work well for differant types of business. i think if its a big business or something generic. advertising is the answer.

i think word of mouth is much stronger but seems to work a lot better for more niche specific things that someone might ask a friend about because they cant find it otherwise. or need someone they can 'trust'.

its like wal-mart and mcdonalds spend a lot on advertising
louis vuitton does not.

a mixture of both

Babagirls 08-29-2004 03:33 AM

both:

first comes advertising

then people try them out

then they say if whatever the adver. was for was good or bad

then it becomes "word of mouth"

I think advertising represents quantity and word of mouth represents quality.

If you are selling vanilla coke, it's advertising . If you are giving a good service, word of mouth

Both. Even if you have the most beautiful and influential person to promote your product if it is nuts you can't entice your target market.

Good points! Niche or specialty tends to work best in small circles and definitely works with word of mouth.

Both are important... you need to advertise for ROI and branding... once familiarity and sales set in, you still need to keep all that up, but hopefully name recognition and reputation will factor in much more for you.
