...use popular domainnames and just change one letter or leave away one to profit from that traffic?
Are they just clever or biz bastards?

e.g. thehu.net (though this is an insurance company or so, they might have good traffic though not really the right one:))

Doing that from a branded domain is lame ... doing it for a generic typo is ok...

example :

if bradshaw would register
www.gofuckyoursefl.com that would be lame

www.ponr.com is cool
