If kobe and shaq were there ... story would probably have been different

Mr. Mojo Risin 08-27-2004 12:01 PM

it doesn't really matter much since it's not really the best U.S. players

I agree, but even with their current roster, they really shouldn't have lost.

Mr. Mojo Risin 08-27-2004 12:02 PM

though congrats to Argentina

hands down to Ginobili. damn, he's the main reason Argentina won the game, scored 29 points. No one in the US quad was successful in defending him, wtf?

along with Kidd, Garnett and Duncan in the 1st five, this could have been a different story

loverboy 08-27-2004 12:44 PM

with this development, surely we will be seing more foreign players suit up in the next NBA season

SKULL 08-27-2004 01:17 PM

Well man, the gold ain't comming to the USA, but I'm happy for my Latino brothers from Argentina for advancing to the finals... :)
(Nightmare Team)

So what you are saying that the USA has such shitty players that you need the absolute top five to win the gold?

The US team doesn't need the top 5 players to win gold. They need players that can play as a team, be able to hit threes and make free throws. Obviously this group can't. The players on the current team aren't shitty players; they just can't play the style of basketball that is required to win gold. International teams are far better than they were in '92, so the US can no longer rely solely on athleticism to win games.

They need to play fundamental, team-oriented basketball. That's why the US women's team is still doing so well unlike the men's team.

any American who writes the three losses at this Olympics off because a bunch of spoiled thugs refused to play for their country is an idiot in denial. It's most likely true that if Shaq, Kobe, Garnett, Carter, McGrady, Kidd answered their call to duty they would have won gold but the team that was sent included two NBA MVP's,Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson and many All-Stars and the two most hyped players by the NBA marketing machine Carmelo and Lebron. It's not long ago that a team like that would have breezed to a gold medal. Just like Canada learned in hockey in the 1970's Americans will now have to accept that the world has caught up to them in basketball. Excuses are for losers. I keep hearing sports pundits whining that the team was poorly composed, that it wasn't a 'team', no role players with talents that meshed together - that's true but a team with Michael Redd and Brent Barry on it still would have had trouble against the best teams in the world.

Shaq will be an old man in 4 years - stop using him as a crutch.
McGrady, Kobe, Carter, Pierce are the same player - three or four of them on your team would have been a mistake. Kidd is overrated and hasn't won a thing.

As long as the NBA sells its individual players rather than its teams nothing is going to change. Blame David Stern as much as anybody. In what other team sport do you hear games promoted that way? Carmelo Anthony vs Lebron James. That's what's wrong - that NBA philosophy has permeated every level of US basketball.

Drunken Sam 08-27-2004 03:57 PM

They didn't need all the top players, just a 3-point shooter.

Brent Barry (45.2% from downtown last season) would've done the job. Though the Spurs would have been looking at having a third tired player in addition to Ginobili and Duncan.

Allen Houston, Mike Finley, or even Reggie Miller would've broken the zone too. Instead, their best shooters were Shawn Marion (34%) and Stephon Marbury (31.8%).
