mixing codeine with alcohol - bad idea?

there is a warning on the bottle. any idea if it just makes you groggy, or if mixing them can actually damage your liver/organs?

gfy, the place to get medical advice :glugglug

JustJen 08-26-2004 07:42 PM

BradM 08-26-2004 07:43 PM

Just don't drive and you should be okay. :)

GonePhishing 08-26-2004 07:44 PM

Don't do it all the time. Once in a great while and you may be okay.

Trixxxia 08-26-2004 07:45 PM

bad idea--> taken from:

http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publication...e/medicine.htm
Colds, coughs, flu, allergies
BenadrylŪ (diphenhydramine); TylenolŪ Cold and Flu (chlorpheniramine); Robitussin A_CŪ (codeine)
Drowsiness, dizziness; increased risk for overdose

ElizaEats 08-26-2004 07:47 PM

Of course it's dangerous. The more enjoyable something is, the more dangerous it is. So try to party right up to death's doorstep, but no further. It's fun and challenging.

You're far too rich to do something STUPID like that. People have died from that combination.

Tom_PMs 08-26-2004 07:47 PM

I'm allergic to codeine...
When I was a kid, I had a nasty stomach virus.. so the doctor gave me a prescription for some liquid that had codeine in it. I guess to settle the stomach. Except it almost killed me because I couldnt stop retching even after my stomach was empty..

I'd say dont do it..

C_U_Next_Tuesday 08-26-2004 07:48 PM

dont over do it and dont make it a habit..:glugglug

It's not going to kill you unless you take the whole bottle of pills and drink a whole bottle of booze.

Nothing wrong with codeine and alcohol in small doses.

Enjoy.

gutter 08-26-2004 07:57 PM

it inceases your fadedness, dont worry about it as long as you don't indulge every night. i'm a college student in isla vista, i drink 8 days a week as well as getting stellar grades, and i know how to juggle the drugs with the alcohol. in fact, i jsut got back from the daytime bar drinking and took vicodin during. trust me, you'll be fine :thumbsup

I prefer 2 Xanax .5 mg and a glass of Belvedeere on the rocks :eyecrazy :eyecrazy :eyecrazy

toddler 08-26-2004 08:13 PM

Its not the best thing to do, but small doses won't kill you. Just like mixing other drugs...moderation is key...

TheJimmy 08-26-2004 08:28 PM

actually back in Jr High, I had a little bike accident that required some dental work and the family friend/doc gave me some codeine initially...

little did I know about the mixing of alcohol and codiene as 'very dangerous' so I took a codeine and had 2 glasses of white wine...

I was fortunate and had no bad reaction...but an amazing buzz...I felt a little wired and stoned at the same time...

never did it again though, found out later that it's a pretty lethal combo...

evildick 08-26-2004 08:33 PM

I seen a friend that was a hardcore whiskey drinker suck back about 7 Tylenol 3's in his glass of booze without even knowing it.

Another guy there had dumped them in there when he wasn't looking. That was a little trick he used to like playing on people.

He went crazy that night and he had to be dragged out by his arms, screaming and yelling the whole time that he was going to kill himself.

Good times!:thumbsup

Goatse 08-26-2004 08:40 PM

Codeine is rather harmless. It can increase the alcohol's potency, but that's about it.

yeah, i took enough biochem to remember that.

unfortunately i'm not sure how long it takes to burn off 1000 mg of acetaminephen. anyone know how long you'd have to wait?

Often times alcoholics have problems with taken painkillers containing acetaminopen as their livers are already saturated and overworked - just taken the normal dose and a couple drinks won't hurt you at all. In fact, it can be rather enjoyable - the alcohol basically amplifies the affects of the drugs. You'll be out of it for the evening for sure!

Just take it slow and you should be fine.

GonePhishing 08-26-2004 09:25 PM

Acetaminephan - would only be present if you were taking tylenol 3 with codine (acetaminphan is tylenol which is indeed rough on your liver with liquor or even with cola)

Yep.. don't know what these fucking 'tards are going on about.. probably because it's subscription based in the US and has a bit of a "harder painkiller" aura.. It's over-the-counter here I basically take 12.8mg and a glass of water before I go to bed EVERYTIME I GET DRUNK. Codeine is the best painkiller over the counter here.. sometimes for a bad headache i'll take up to 37mg.
I wouldn't really take it to get a buzz though.. you'd probably have to take a bit of it..

baddog 08-26-2004 09:30 PM

don't be a pussy . . . or an idiot

2 codeine and a drink isn't going to kill you

20/10 maybe

GonePhishing 08-26-2004 09:33 PM

If it's pills it won't have acetaminphan mixed in.

If it is in the form of cough syrup then you are dealing with
codeine - pheniramine - guaifenesin
*not a good idea to mix

Again if it's tylenol3 - then it is mixed with ace.

Nah, pretty much all medium strength prescription painkillers have 500mg or so of Acetaminophen as a secondary ingredient - it has a synergistic affect with whatever the main painkiller is (codeine, hydrocodone, etc...)

mahoney 08-26-2004 09:41 PM

yep, they are T3's

GonePhishing 08-26-2004 09:43 PM

"yep, they are T3's"

I won't tell you not to do it / but I won't say it's totally fine to either... I know a lot of people who do mix t3 with booze an they have been fine (but who knows for sure).

you snort codeine?!?

Plan9 08-26-2004 09:51 PM

Heres an article on the subject

Here's the most relevant part for what you're asking:

Quote:

A similar effect occurs with medications that contains codeine. The pain killer is considered an opiode-based drug which also depresses the central nervous system. Taking codeine and a 12 oz. glass of beer will double feelings of sedation and slow reaction time.
In other words, you'll be fine - just don't plan on going anywhere or being too coordinated for the rest of the evening. You'll definitely feel out of it.

"Nah, pretty much all medium strength prescription painkillers have 500mg or so of Acetaminophen as a secondary ingredient - it has a synergistic affect with whatever the main painkiller is (codeine, hydrocodone, etc...)"

You are sort of correct. Most painkillers you get are do have ace. as a secondary, but in the way of codine it's most common appearance is going to be T3. I still say that most pills of codine that are called codine do not have it.

If it was codine mixed with other chemicals it would be part of the name of whatever med you are taking which is why they call t3... well t3... they don't call t3 codine because that would be false. Same thing with cough syrups that bear codine.. They called Robotussin 22 or Robo with codine...

Codine pills are just codine pills. I.E.
Brand Name
Codeine Contin

Common Name
codeine controlled release

Brand Name
Codeine Phosphate

Common Name
codeine

Those are the two most common codine pills you see in just a pill form. Niether come with Ace mixed in.
BTW - hydrocodone is just the generic name for Vicodin

That is true if it's just codine.
