Can somebody explain the '4 free' thing to me?
How do they make money? I understand that there is some value to the email addresses, but is there more than that? Are they full of upsells?

Serious question and would love serious advice :-)

yeah filled with upsells and emails can be sold or they can use those mails to mail themseleves
