although I haven't heard the interview yet , I was assuming the interview was with Ali G thus a character and not with Sacha Cohen his normal self ?

They say "Interview with Ali G" because that is what he is primarily known as. If they say "interview with Sacha Baron Cohen tomorrow" it's not much of a draw. With Ali G you can put a name to a face.
