A moral dilemma....
 

About 3 weeks ago I interviewed a new model. She is barely 18 but absolutely perfect for a solo site.

I called her tonight to discuss details of some extensive shoots with her and she asked me how many hours a day I would need her. She said she starts school on the 5th of September.

I told her I would need her for full days for at least 2 weeks then asked her how many hours a day she is attending school.

She says: "I'm going to be a senior in High School."


Soooooo....Here's my dilemma.......I know for a fact that when I bust loose with this site that it will get massive exposure. Do I really want her to be subjected to the kind of high school bullshit that will surely come out of this?

She understands the risks...In fact...I told her that it's not a matter of somebody maybe finding out...It is 100% guaranteed that people will find out.

She is still very interested and is contacting my attorney tomorrow to sign paperwork for exclusivity.

Your thoughts?

Save her for June, when she graduates. Not worth the trouble

While the law is and always will be the overriding factor in any business related decision like this, I'd think long and hard about the risk reward here.

Does the financial gain outweigh the potential attention and risk you might encounter?

Does the girl really seem mature enough to be making this decision?

If you answer no to either one of those, then I'd leave it be. If the girl is that determined to do it, then she'll find another way, and maybe the next person won't be so concerned with her welfare.

Tough decision and I'm glad it's not me that's got to make it.

I went through the same thing with one of my models Celeste Star. She turned 18 and was still attending school. I had the same thoughts as you are having now. The thing is Aaron if you don't sign her she will most definatley go to someone else. Make the money brotha and don't let your personal feelings for her personal life your dilema. She is of age and that should be your only concern in my opinion.

If I was making the call on this one , I would proceed with paperwork / sign her , do the shoots you need now, but only publish it when she finishes highschool

Me thinks the best thing to do is shoot the hell out of her then release the site AFTER she graduates.

but i'd do it. you can only warn a person so many different ways. respecting that most high schoolers aren't mature enough (regardless if they are legally old enough) to make well thought out life decisions ..... I know the type of guy you are .... and expect that you have already screened this girl to determine whether or not she is one of those girls... or whether she has her wits about her.

if you have felt her out ... and she seems with it .... and you've really given her the full 9 yards ... as far as consequences .... etc.... I'd go for it

BUT... there will be a back lash. it'll come from parents. and since she's still in high school. it'll probably also come from the community. of course you'll legally be complying with the laws.... but part of your decision has gotta be based on whether or not you want to deal with the drama that ensues. and if she is going to school in your home town.... your life will certainly be easier ..... to walk away .... and not let it effect your family life.

If she really wants to do it, she'll do it whether or not you are the photographer. Just be sure she's *really* prepared for what's gonna happen (maybe have her talk with some other models?) and there's nothing wrong with doing it.

One thing that I truly pride myself on is that I have NEVER (knock on wood) had a model call me up or show up on my door step and start crying about what she did and asking me to take it down.

I fully explain the risks involved simply to avoid such things.

Absolutely. This is her Senior year of high school. Even if she's too naive to realize it, her memories of this year should not be about the shit she will no doubt take when people at her school find out. Take your time and film her all year. You'll have a shit load of content by graduation and you can do it then.

What's the parent situation like? Even though she may be of legal age, if she were mine, I'd still make your life a living hell. I'd also make sure they're not gonna give her the boot or you may end up with a new roommate. ;-}

This girl did not answer my ad....I recruited her out of the mall so she is not likely to pick up any of the weekly papers and start calling photographers.

Aaron, I'd wait. I can't see where the headache and the inevitable damage control would be worth it. Anything that even resembles High School is bound to cause trouble (in my opinion); that she is actually still in High School does nothing but cement this.

If she is that interested she will wait. Court her (if she is actually worth it), while you make a name for her/tease us all with non-nudes (creating anticipation on both ends) without plastering her on the web naked cause you can.

It could, if you employ my logic, wrap it up nicely where the model is concerned as well as create the publicity you want prior to the launch of a "solo" model site; all the while avoiding even a hint of "high school" at actual launch....

Just my two (very conservative) two cents on the subject...

As Kimmy said..you have to evaluate the risk/reward.

There are alot of unforeseeables with this kind of situation and though things might look great right now, it could turn into a huge headache down the road...both for you and for her.

When we first got started in this biz back in 97, we were doing live video conferencing and we hired this girl who was 18. It was all fine and dandy until her parents got involved..

It might be best to do what you suggested and shoot her now and release it when she graduates. I also like the idea of 'anticipation' and 'countdown' until she graduates..you can really play on that alot marketing wise..

Begs the question; if the time line is revealed and the fact that you shot her while she was still in High School (18 or not), will the possible back lash be worth it?

Why not pump the shit out of her with bikini shots and what have you til she's ready and out of high school?

If she really knows what she is doing she will be there when she is done with High School; if you really wanna to see long term you could court her in that manner and probably lock her in no problem...

You're a good man for at least considering her interests. The possibility (if the site went as well as you say) is she could be subject to a lot of bullshit, and perhaps leave school (although that is doubtful if she is that close to finishing I guess). I'd say either inform her of what you expect to happen, and see if she is ok with it, or else wait until whenever she graduates before you launch the site.

This is what I would do. Maybe wait until spring to launch? Just seems like too much potential drama.

Is it possible to shoot the content for now but maybe wait awhile on releasing it? I'm sure you could shoot a huge pile of photosets and wait until school is out or about to end. I'm sure the revenue will be there either way.

take the pics now, then by the time she's out of high school you'll have tons of content to use. lauch the site and include pics of her high school graduation :)

Good decision AaronM & commendable for thinking of her interests - I don't know how many people would put consideration of a model's emotions/future in front of the almighty buck. Good luck with her!

It's very good of you to think of her in all this.. the potential for harassment is there most definitely.. maybe have her talk to friends and take some time to think about it, even though she thinks she understands the potential implications, it's good to give her time to come to terms with it.

If she's still in High School she's likely living with her parents. That opens a very HUGE potential problem that may not be worth dealing with.

If you're going to do it, I would make sure I had enough content shot for 2 years if I were you.

that's what you should do. you will play very fair and still not miss the opportunity.
