which car should I keep?

I have a busted down truck ('84 Dodge Ram 50). I'm sure you've all seen it by now.
I also have a busted down Jaguar ('78).

I blew a rod thru the engine on Easter and it's sat in my parents back yard since then. My truck is.. well it's a piece of shit.

They both need TONS of work to get to where I like them. The truck could be tricked out into a mini-truck-retro cool ride.

The Jag is so big you can almost walk around in the back seats. Which means it'll fit my family. The truck will not. The truck is a 2 seater no matter how you slice it.

The Jag is harder to work on unless I convert it to a chevy engine.
The truck is pushing well over 150K miles.

My goal is to get rid of one and fix the other up pretty good. I have never owned a new car. I like older cars. I will probably NEVER own a new car, so which one should I keep?

With family = Jag.
No family = truck.

Screaming 08-23-2004 03:26 PM

Jag

Alltopnotch 08-23-2004 03:27 PM

chalk both.

Dagwolf 08-23-2004 03:29 PM

Sell them both and buy another Jag that needs less work. :glugglug

If you're very concerned about cost, keep the truck and sell the Jag.

Putting a chevy engine in a Jaguar is a sin.

RedShoe 08-23-2004 03:30 PM

The jag is the one with the blown rod. (got ahead of myself while typing... don't you just hate that?)

Nate-MM2 08-23-2004 03:30 PM

Drop a 350cid SBC into the Jag.

ok, but I'm a typical mexican. I put a fuckin stereo in that thing that cost more than the car. My goal was to make that thing show room floor quality. Classic Jag style. However when that rod blew, it shot flames out from behind the car right along side the gas tanks.

Try driving 70 down the freeway with fire coming out of your car along side the gas tanks and all you see when you look in your rear view mirror is your 2 year old baby smiling back with flames shotting up past your windows.

Very discouraging.

Not in 78 they didn't.

yeah I know that. im just saying, putting a chevy motor in it is no worse than buying a brand new one with a ford motor.

When I was in high school a friend of mine had a jag with a chevy 350 in it and it was painted that mystic paint, you know that changes colors when viewed from different angles.:thumbsup

Manowar 08-23-2004 04:23 PM

Sell them both and replace them with a mini scooter:glugglug

LOL, good point. :)

JACASS 08-23-2004 04:33 PM

I would stick with the Jag. There are a ton of used engines for the 78 around, just do a search for Jaguar clubs and their associated websites will have some good links to reputable mechanics/parts dealers. Should not be too expensive. I have a 67 420, and love it.

quiet 08-23-2004 04:35 PM

junk them both and buy a new, safe, reliable honda accord.

n3in 08-23-2004 04:36 PM

be a family man, go with the jag :thumbsup

Agreed.

If you've got a kid (or two or twenty), and this is for an everyday driving car, safety is your #1 concern. Airbags, ABS, etc. aren't in those 70's cars.

If the Accord's too small, go to a police auction and get a Crown Vic :)

Gabriel 08-23-2004 04:48 PM

Keep which ever one will pull down that fucking fire hazard palm tree down.

dennisthemenace 08-23-2004 04:57 PM

Ditch 'em both and get a '64 Lincoln with suicide doors :thumbsup

Then make a Deathmobile!

Spunky 08-23-2004 05:11 PM

It will cost too much for the jag to get fixed, and the truck is impractical for a family...dump em both. You probably get some decent coin for parts on the jag

No thanks. A friend of mine bought a truck and got fucked on the payments when he took a huge pay cut.
