Prostitutes in a Romanian town have decided to accept food coupons as payment.

The girls from Deva said they use half of the coupons to buy food and sell the other half under its value to get some money.

One of the girls, Elena told Curierul newspaper: "I have been doing this job here for about two years and lately our clients are very few. So we had this idea: maybe men will be happier to come to us if they don't have to give us money which may be monitored by wives."

Food coupons are given by many of the Romanian employers as supplement to their monthly retribution.

Have you ever seen a welfare mom try to use one of those things at the checkout? When I lived in Louisiana it was pretty funny. They have "Louisiana Purchase" welfare debit cards and they often did not realize they needed a pin number.

Sad state of a country that people need to sell themselves just for food. Makes you see how lucky we are here.

That is absolutely the truth. Even if something happened to all of my income and my family I do have the comfort of knowing there is a local "soup kitchen" which is actually pretty well funded and stocked by local charities and churches and serves well balanced meals.

Slightly changing the subject that is why I was a bit miffed when Oprah said the other day that the saddest thing she ever experienced was the recent jury she was on and convicted a man of murder and plans to do a show on it. I thought about all the AIDS orphans and starving children she featured on her week of "Oprah is rich and bringing token crap to African children". :(
