GFY Book Club

Seems like a nice way to get some threads not purely about "would you hit it" and stuff like that on GFY every once in a while.

Basically, every month a bunch of people from GFY could decide on a book to read and discuss it in a thread at the end of the month.
I know for a fact that some of you could use all the culture you can get, and it could be a good way to find stuff you'd otherwise never read.

Anyone up for it?

PS. I haven't slept all night and just came back from running a few miles, so if this a particularly weird idea, don't blame me, blame the lack of sleep

Gheenz 08-22-2004 10:22 PM

Awesome idea. I vote to enlist it :thumbsup

Spunky 08-22-2004 10:23 PM

I think the majority would only go for pictures

Ice 08-22-2004 10:25 PM

I would suggest anything by...

Og Mandino
Napoleon Hill
George S. Clason
Dale Carnegie
Stephen R. Covey
Norman Vincent Peale

:thumbsup

BradM 08-22-2004 10:25 PM

This month:
Spot

Marcus Aurelius 08-22-2004 10:25 PM

anything with pop ups or an interactive story where you decide the ending would probably do okay.

Who needs the majority? There are so many people on GFY that even a minority could very well have enough people to make this interesting.

Besides, think of the cognitive dissonance this will cause with law enforcement officers and such who are monitoring GFY :1orglaugh

wtfent 08-22-2004 10:30 PM

I will do it. I read a lot:thumbsup

Nice idea.. but maybe not for the masses at GFY.

Count me in though if you do organize something.

Living For Today 08-22-2004 10:46 PM

It would be interesting to see what % of gfyers actually read books.

exactly... but what if the book chosen is not their type? would you judge them by their posts? personally, i don't read books if i don't like the first chapter or if i'm not familiar with the author

One of the most interesting things of stuff like this is that you get to read stuff you might otherwise have never read at all.

If you *really* don't like the book, though, nobody is forcing you to read it and post about it. Hell, you can even stick with reading what others say about it and then pretending you read it to friends :winkwink:

By the way, I think you just passed 10k posts without noticing :helpme

HAPPYPEEKERS 08-22-2004 11:18 PM

Intensity from Dean Koontz is an amazing book that is very hard to put down. I suggest it to anyone that likes a good scary mystery :2 cents: :thumbsup

Also.. Devils Knot ... I can not remember who wrote this but It is a true story and a very good book. You will be amazed at the events that actually happened.. :2 cents:

Have a great night :-)

I read probably 2 books a week minimum. I can't usually fall asleep until I've read for an hour or so to unwind.

zzgundamnzz 08-22-2004 11:22 PM

Alright Im in...

I need to start reading again. After not reading books and reading so many mispelled words on this board... I could really use some culture.

beemk 08-22-2004 11:22 PM

great idea

DarkBob 08-22-2004 11:22 PM

I usually read every night before I go to sleep. I'm just finishing up Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.

wdsguy 08-23-2004 01:06 AM

Probably just mixed literature. A vote would probably be a good way to decide what to read.

Im down, but I hope that you do realize that 90% of the people here cant read and dont know what a book is

AmeliaG 08-23-2004 02:46 AM

I'd probably be up for it. Then I'll feel like I didn't waste the dough on that comparative literatures degree.

So far, it looks like quite a few people are interested. I think the adult industry is about to witness the birth of it's very own book club :1orglaugh

woj 08-23-2004 06:21 AM

not a bad idea :thumbsup

Reak 08-23-2004 06:25 AM

i'd do it

kent_braincash 08-23-2004 07:01 AM

I don't think that will be nothing great ...

Doctor Dre 08-23-2004 11:34 AM

I would be down if it's well organised

Marcus Aurelius 08-23-2004 11:35 AM

yeah, like dre said. if its organized well I think it would be very cool.

punker barbie 08-23-2004 11:35 AM

i think thats a great idea! count me in!

plus im almost done with a time to kill by John Grisham....

MT_Butterfly 08-23-2004 11:36 AM

Great idea! I read several books a week, and it would be great to discuss them. :thumbsup

Trixie 08-23-2004 11:39 AM

Woohoo! Count me in too!

I'd prefer to read nonfiction, but fiction's probably less controversial.

What do you consider well organized?
I don't really think a lot of organization would have to be involved... Just nominate and vote for books every month, decide on a day to discuss them, and discuss the books in a somewhat orderly manner in one or several threads on GFY.

Basic_man 08-23-2004 12:54 PM

I hate reading .. :warning

Peaches 08-23-2004 12:58 PM

I'm reading Bringing Down the House and The Great Fire now.

Add Tony Robbins and that'd be my list exactly :thumbsup

KCat 08-23-2004 01:38 PM

I'm in! I'd love to have folks to discuss books with. How do we pick the first book? Everybody come up with a few ideas & then vote?

Goatse 08-23-2004 02:33 PM

I'd be willing to participate, as long as we stick to non-fiction. Basically anything related to business and self-improvement interests me. We could start with Dale Carnegie's classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, which should be the bible of anyone in business. :2 cents:
