how much are the top people making? i know Webfather is worth millions, but how many more are making mid 6 to low 7 figures/year, just with the domain market? just curious as to what the potential is - seems like a hard business to scale up since there are only so many quality domains...

Good questions there.

Domain buying and selling is like anything. You try and buy low or at a good price and sell high.

We bought tons of domains in the old days and if the price is right, we sell 2-3 a year or so. Unless it's a super generic word or has good typins / traffic, always be careful and study before buying.

Kinda like the stock market, speculation you know. Like I got oilforsale.com a few years back, not that good of a name at all, but you know everytime there is a gas crunch or prices are going up alot, I get 3-6 emails about selling that domain :) Lots of other examples you know.

With a bit of a shitty economy right now, it's a good time to buy some domains and put them away for awhile.

What type of return are you looking to generate? There are a number of ways to play the game: generic acquisition/resell, ppc income, development, etc.

Say you invested $500k in domains this year, how much would you want back same time next year?

I hate predictable guaranteed returns.

Im doing a okay per month.

I buy domains for cheap and sale for a bit more.

Current domains i just got my hands on.

Kills.Info (received offers at $50+) (paid $6 for it)
6KA.net (reg fee) (appraised at $20 min)

And a lot more domains.

Its not much that i make but im not heavily in the biz

reg em .. sell em for 20$ build a nest egg and start buying better domains at say 100$ .... ect :)

Best way. But regging is a business in its self.
I read and pay attention to it a lot, its like a hobby.

For example some fucktard let 7e.org expire today.
Guess how hard it would be to just "reg" that domain.

For me, i started off searching and finding GOOD domains for $3-$8

The hardest thing in the domain biz is not buying, but selling your precious domains.

Once you get hooked it's very difficult to part with your properties.

It's like art collecting. You fall in love with your paintings and no matter how much you get offered you just don't want to let go of them.

When you buy something for a mil and someone says I'll give you 5 for it and you havn't even had it in your portfolio for a a couple months yet and you say no thanks not interested.

I see so much domain buying and selling, but not enough domain developing and branding.

IMO developing and branding is where the real money is, not just buying/selling.

Think of it this way. You bought a domain with intentions of developing it, and you mihght have already started. Its hard to part with it.

I own atleast 4 GREAT domains that would make GREAT sites just sitting around. When i get an offer i will sell, no attachment

certainly. but what i admire so much about domain buying/selling is that it is so ultra low maintenance. just amazing. as soon as you get into development, it loses that aspect.

KRL - At the moment, I think buying is the hardest thing to do in this biz. Not due to lack of capital or acquisition power. But rather due to over-saturation, competition, and overall scarcity of these names. Additionally, the late 90's bubble didn't help these original domain owners with gauging the market value of their domain name. The deals, at least in my opinion, are becoming harder and harder to find. Those rare deals that are in fact out there, are becoming swooped up immediately. Hundreds of speculators doing bulk lists of emails each day, fishing for domains.

No offense, but that is so small time, that it is just a waste of time.

As a return on your investment, yes, buying at $7 and selling at $20 is a good ROI, but you would have to be able to do that like 20 times a day (every day) to even start making some worthwhile money.

I dont know. On average $80 a week profit for me from domains

Get good domain, install script and design, build PR and traffic and sell.

These are small sites and looking for profit of $150+ per site hopefully.

You have to be creative and think outside the box.

I just bought 10 domains on Friday. They were overlooked expired domains. I paid reg fee only. I put a deal together already with a buddy of mine that owns a company that specializes in the biz sector they theme too. They will make me back about about $25,000 to $50,000 a week with what we're doing with them.

Wook up today and checked my droplist. I dont think i have ever seen a two character domain drop. I will find out more info on it later but i think becuase its a dot org it was open for regular registration. Someone probably got it for $9

Looking back, we all have "what ifs" that could have made us millions, had we just "known what we do now". But we didn't, end of story. Thus, it's time to innovate new approaches for the future, rather than ponder those of which are of the past.

Finding good expired or un-regged domains is hard but i have done it myself. They do pay off and are worth the $8-$10
