I don't know if there is a separate rule for marketing materials but on a website you can have up to a 30 second sample clip of a song before being required to pay royalties. Same with "bumper" music in and out of segments of radio shows. Use a long clip as your "theme song", pay royalties; use a 20 second clip going to break or as a sample, no royalties.

I said in another thread that I think a drunken, out of key love song perfectly expresses my feelings for GFY and its members!

I think the rule is 15 secs sample before you need a license.. The rappers including Biz took others music for their own for years and years.. hell I'm almost ceriain Biz sampled the background music himself in that song..

this is considered unauthorized COMMERCIAL use of a song.

I love watching others come up with defenses for them, while those using the music ignore anyone who brings it up. (see Lightspeed do it here)

You're not allowed to use or sample even 0.000001 seconds of something without paying for it.

then wtf is it when a rapper uses it in one of their songs and puts the song on a album and sells it? Again, I believe but I'm not 100% that Biz sampled the piano section from another song.

i pay 100$$ a piece for those loop discs now. I have 5 disc libraries of sounds that cost 5k, if it was free for all people wouldnt pay to use sounds like i do.

I have over 8k worth of sounds bought, dont talk to me about samples.

I got my first sampler in the early 90s and have been involved with music for a very long time and this is not the same.

this is commercial use of a song, and is not to be compared with a fucking drum loop.

lemme just say as for Biz markie sampling, the individual drum sounds were sampled individually, and the beat is not a loop. Any old drum machine back in the day like MPc3000 or SP12 like too short used can get sampled drum sounds...

the piano you here is a simple sample of individual piano keys and you can play what you want.

this is basic shit.

anyway... i really am not here to fight for this crap, nothing will change what people do and i still push Lightspeed.
