Who is the dude singing on the Lightspeed Cash banner

"You! You got what I need!"

I've heard worse singers, but not many.

AVM 08-19-2004 06:11 AM

Biz Markie

AVM 08-19-2004 06:12 AM

By the way, the off-key singing was part of the appeal/success of that song.

You must either be over 45 or under 21 to not know who the 'Biz' is.

Or a complete and utter sheltered geek.

I was surprised myself of this question.

candyflip 08-19-2004 06:18 AM

So another banner with unlicensed music?

I really can't believe they let that shit slide here.

Jakke PNG 08-19-2004 06:18 AM

Or someone outside USA who doesn't listen to rap/mtv.. but that's a great minority.

I don't know if there is a separate rule for marketing materials but on a website you can have up to a 30 second sample clip of a song before being required to pay royalties. Same with "bumper" music in and out of segments of radio shows. Use a long clip as your "theme song", pay royalties; use a 20 second clip going to break or as a sample, no royalties.

I said in another thread that I think a drunken, out of key love song perfectly expresses my feelings for GFY and its members!

Actually, I like to use fun music that sticks in people's heads. Admit it, how many of you have been singing "You got what I neeeeed..." in your heads lately?

I think the rule is 15 secs sample before you need a license.. The rappers including Biz took others music for their own for years and years.. hell I'm almost ceriain Biz sampled the background music himself in that song..

Goose 08-19-2004 10:59 AM

I just luv that banner...and I'm hopefully not the only one...

Marcus Aurelius 08-19-2004 11:00 AM

biz markie is the fucking shit man. hes a crazy mofo and he just dont give a rip what people think.

Fletch XXX 08-19-2004 11:00 AM

i love these guys who use copywritten music in their banners.

they can use soth park images, steal any songs they want but they go ape shuit when someone snatches a pic of theirs.

incorrect.

this is not considered a "sample."

this is considered unauthorized COMMERCIAL use of a song.

I love watching others come up with defenses for them, while those using the music ignore anyone who brings it up. (see Lightspeed do it here)

You're not allowed to use or sample even 0.000001 seconds of something without paying for it.

JSA Matt 08-19-2004 11:06 AM

Did Purecash finally get a C&D? I havn't seen that KK rip off logo in a while.... ?

then wtf is it when a rapper uses it in one of their songs and puts the song on a album and sells it? Again, I believe but I'm not 100% that Biz sampled the piano section from another song.

i pay 100$$ a piece for those loop discs now. I have 5 disc libraries of sounds that cost 5k, if it was free for all people wouldnt pay to use sounds like i do.

I have over 8k worth of sounds bought, dont talk to me about samples.

I got my first sampler in the early 90s and have been involved with music for a very long time and this is not the same.

this is commercial use of a song, and is not to be compared with a fucking drum loop.

and you arent evern 50% let alone 100% man.

They usually pay for it upfront.

If not, they get assraped like Vanilla Ice did.

hahaha same old tired argument.

did i make money with them?

:1orglaugh

Fletch XXX 08-19-2004 11:14 AM

anyway i have no desire to argue with you folks.

lemme just say as for Biz markie sampling, the individual drum sounds were sampled individually, and the beat is not a loop. Any old drum machine back in the day like MPc3000 or SP12 like too short used can get sampled drum sounds...

the piano you here is a simple sample of individual piano keys and you can play what you want.

this is basic shit.

anyway... i really am not here to fight for this crap, nothing will change what people do and i still push Lightspeed.

that is what separates commericial use from private use, yes.

there is a book called "The Business of Music" pick it up sometime.

I have sat down with entertainment lawyers and talked about this while paying on the clock, you people can *think* what you want.

:1orglaugh

hey guy, i push your stuff and im not being a dick.

but dont act like you arent doing wrong here, its funny to see how one action is okay and one is not.

As long as your girls convert, i dont casre what laws youre breaking here.

that is between you, lensman, and who you people rip off not me.

As a purchaser of content, and as an educated musician on the digital rights of audio and artists, i think it is in fact hypocritical.

its commercial use and you know it man, but its all good, we know most will choose your side over mine.

just send me the checks homie.

:thumbsup

Fletch XXX 08-19-2004 11:38 AM

oh id also like to say hahaha

that the REASON Biz Markie disappeared into obscurity after this song came out, was because.... survey say.... LEGAL ISSUES!

hahaha rap history is fun.

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Biz%20Markie

he got in trouvbe for samples in his early works and guess what, ALL SAMPLES WERE CLEARED AFTER THAT, including samples in the above song.

man this is like yo mtv raps history 101
