Ok..from personal experience, in a home or office with 10+ computers that need to be online 24-7 with 99.9% uptime..what should I be looking for?
(1) T-1 (2) ADSL (3) SDSL (4) ISDN (5) Cable Modem (6) IDSL Lets hear from all you bandwidth luvin people out there! Give me some opinions on which is best from personal experience..through which company etc. -pr0- |
I have 9 computers off a 3com 100Mb Switch, There is an ADSL line 6Mb down / 384K up going into a linux router. I also have a 1.5Mb up / down cable connection that goes into that same linux router, and finally I have a backup 56K modem in that router so if dsl and cable die I can still get online http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif The linux box is an old P233 that I had laying around, stuck a 4 port ethernet card into for 3 inputs 1 output. The router takes care if either the dsl or cable die off so I never notice. It also gives me great download and upload preformance.

pr0,
It all depends on what's available to you and what ya want to spend. In our area we can't get x-dsl yet, but can get cable so we went with what we could get (3 years ago dsl wasn't really an option). We run a 5 pc soho and most of the internet work involves downloading large config. files for network testing equipment, so cable is fine (we get peak dl @ 2 Mbps). I do a fair amount of uploading (well duh http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif ) and get peak ul rates of ~500 Kbps. Cable can be tricky cause your on a node and your rates depend on how many of the slots on the node are filled. As far as x-dsl check out http://qwest.com for a feel for prices on various a-dsl configs. (up to 7 Mbps down 1 Mbps up). Also available in some areas are: v-dsl upto 55 Mbps down 2.3 Mbps up (but only if you live next to to the provider http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif ) h-dsl - same as t1 (aka ds1) 1.544 Mbps sysmetric s-dsl - varible in 192 Kbps units up to 1/2 t1 symmetric i-dsl 144 Kbps symmetric isdn (bri) 128 Kbps symmetric sh-dsl (coming soon) 2.3 Mbps symmetric 24/7 @ 99.9 my experence would say t1 or t3. Friends have had problems with i-dsl, isdn, and a-dsl and att broadband has been a real PIA (weekly down time). But don't know if that's the norm. Mark |
If you want any sort of peace of mind, "guarantee", or whatever about uptime. Go with a T1. Some providers will even give you a SLA (uunet) on it, which is nonexistant with DSL.
If you call the telco and say your T1 is down, they generally take it seriously. If you call and say your DSL is down they tend to laugh and you and tell you to join the crowd. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif T1's are seen as business critical lines, as DSL is just joe-consumer stuff and no one cares if their down for 8 hours. Do NOT go with DSL for a reliable means of transport. It WILL come back to haunt you, and you'll just be told when you bitch you should have went with a T1 and it's your own damn fault. (hell, that's what I'd say.) -Phil |
do yourself a favor and stay away from QWest DSL. I have a friend that tells me that they disconnect him every 2 hours (to try to stop people from being on it 24/7). This may not still be true...but it's what I heard...
I used Earthlink/Mindspring's DSL service, and found it quite fast and reliable. As far as a T-1 goes, whats those run? Ballpark... I'm currently on cable with 2 computers (at the moment...with 2 more added soon). Majik |
