Whats a killer setup for a new puter?

I need a new computer soon. I need something good, very good, custom build.
It needs big harddrives for content and possibly a back up system?

Also a nice graphics card and other stuff that will improve speed.

What to buy? I dont need anything extreme tho, just the fasted/best at the best price...i dont need a gadget that makes makes it 1% faster for 300 bucks extra if you know what i mean.

Give me some suggestions. Dont point me to websites, im in holland, im not gonna order systems online.

EviLGuY 08-17-2004 04:53 PM

Get an athlon 64 processor. Thats my tip. :)

2 x 200 gigs?
Are there systems that let back up stuff? Like 2 more baracs to which i can copy my orignal files weekly or am i talking nonsense here?
I would cry for a week if i lost a 200 gig drive with content.

Dirty F 08-17-2004 04:57 PM

Any specific sound cards? Any other cool extra options?

mule 08-17-2004 04:59 PM

I'd go for this one, Battus:
http://silverapp1.mycom.nl/MyCom/Sto...aseSystemID=63

oops, forgot to ad: that's the bare-bones system, you can select more RAM, different harddrives etc. I've bought lots of systems from them, and they rock.

Libertine 08-17-2004 05:02 PM

Check out www.norrod.nl. It lets you configure your system entirely. Just go for something like:

- Asus MB A8V Deluxe 939 AMD
- AMD Athlon64 3800+ sock 939
- Crucial 512Mb DDR PC3200
- Crucial 512Mb DDR PC3200
- HDD 250Gb 7200rpm SATA
- HDD 250Gb 7200rpm SATA
- VGA ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb

Dirty F 08-17-2004 05:05 PM

Cool, thanks for the info...

CamChicks 08-17-2004 05:06 PM

People starting these kind of threads would do themselves a favor by mentioning their budget. $1500? $3000? :2 cents:

Jer 08-17-2004 05:08 PM

I bought these parts last month:

PIV 3.2
Motherboard Asus P4C800 Deluxe
Gexcube ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 256bits
Case coolers 80x80 (Cooler Master)
(2) 200GB Seagate SATA
Floppy Drive
DVD Recorder LG 4082B
Thermaltake PSU W0020 (480W)

And I ordered these parts this month:

2x512MB Corsair Memory (Dual Channel TWINX1024-3200XLPT 1GB)
Logitech MX310 Optical Mouse

Can't wait to get the memory sticks so I can build and start using it.

That's what RAID is for.

Dirty F 08-17-2004 05:09 PM

Well, no real budget but im also not looking to spend 4k.

Anything between 1 and 1.5k euros i guess (up to 2000 dollars)

Why are some 128 mb vid cards more expensive than 256 ones?

Jer 08-17-2004 05:10 PM

Total price: $2200 :(

Ah... that's a pretty limited budget if you want a very good setup. Not sure if you can get anything good for that price...

The reason that there are vid cards with 128 mb that are more expensive than 256 mb ones is that the amount of memory isn't all there is to vid cards. There's also clockspeed, memory type, etc.

Depends on the processor they use.. some use more ram as a gimmick and use a slower / older processor.

With video cards it's pretty much.. the more you spend the better the card performance wise.

Well i could spend more if really needed...but whats more expensive than 2k?

Btw, i dont need a screen and software...so thats already like 4 or 500 bucks less.

Because sticking cheap memory onto older cards is a good way to get rid of stock you don't want anymore. That extra memory on the older cards usually offers no performance advantage - that's not where th bottleneck is.

A reasonably high-end setup (but not the best) would probably cost around 2000 euro. Here's a 2k euro setup from norrod:

- Chieftec Bigtower ZWART
- Asus MB A8V Deluxe 939 AMD
- AMD Athlon64 3800+ sock 939
- DDRAM 512Mb PC3200 400MHz
- DDRAM 512Mb PC3200 400MHz
- HDD 160Gb 7200rpm SATA
- HDD 160Gb 7200rpm SATA
- DVD ROM 16x Speler ZWART
- DVD +/- Rewriter 12x speed zw
- VGA ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
- Linksys WLAN PCI 54Mb kaart
- Systeemassemblage
- Microsoft Windows XP PRO NL

There are many different RAID setups, and it gets pretty complicated,
but in short what you were wanting is called a RAID 1.

RAID 1 is when you have 2 harddrives that mirror eachother. So if one dies, you still have an exact copy, right up to the minute it died. You lose no data, and your PC keeps working.

Any good motherboard supports RAID.
The only cost is the additional harddrive/s.

Something like the Abit IC7-G will allow you up to 4 harddrives in a couple different RAID configurations.

RAID just means automatically writing the same info to more then 1 hard drive.

Most new motherboards these days have RAID (thats what you'd be using with 2 drives) controllers on them.. unless you get a bargain basement motherboard.

Oh good, so i just need to buy 2 more drives..

Sounds like a good deal, thats only a few 100 extra. That or the risk of one day losing a 200 gig disk :)

Additionally, RAID 1 also gives twice the Read transaction rate as single disks... which is pretty nice too :glugglug

Yes, that's a nice setup. You can get that for more or less the same price at Mycom on the Kinkerstraat as well.

My dual 2.0 processor G5 has been by far the best system I've ever used. Check 'em out. :thumbsup

The 23" HDTV plasma display doesn't hurt either.

If you buy the right parts and overclock, you can safely build a machine better than any $3K+ storebought PC for $1500-$2000.

The retailers won't do this though, for legal/contractual reasons; not because it's dangerous. The software onboard many motherboards will even allow you to do it from within a menu. You just have to do your homework before choosing components.

Also, this is a bad time to buy with it being summer and Doom3 coming out etc - prices of parts have gone up from where they were 3 or 6 months ago. I'm waiting 'till late Sept or Oct before I start mine.
