What kind of router? the newer ones, you just need to set that drive to be shared, and rebootand magically works... what OS are you using on both pcs?

you have to turn on windows file sharing and stuff in the network options for the adapter the link is on then if it can't see it

go on the laptop and find its IP
and then on the other one type in explorer: \\ipaddress\ to connect

to find its IP go to a shell: run > "cmd"
and run ipconfig /all

you might want to set it a static IP

Are they both in the same workgroup? Make sure they are - it's much easier.

You can directly map the drive/share using (at a dos prompt) or Start=>Run:

net use * \\machinename\sharename

Or

net use * \\machinename\$c

for the entire c: drive. The "$" tells windows it's a hidden share (drives are always mapped and are hidden).

The "*" means "use the next available drive". You can put your own drive letter in it's place:

net use y: \\machinename\$c

You can also use the machine's IP in place of the machine name.

"net use" is great for setting up batch files.
