the megachurch - defined as any with more than 2,000 worshippers

In 1970, there were 10 megachurches in the United States. Today there are an estimated 850 non-Catholic megachurches, with four of the six largest in Texas,

After a 14-month, $75 million renovation, the Compaq Center will reopen as Lakewood Church, the nation's largest house of worship. With 16,000 seats, two waterfalls and an interior camera ready for Sunday broadcasts, the reborn structure dovetails national trends that promise to shake up the economics of urban real estate: the increasing number of obsolete sports stadiums and the meteoric growth of huge religious congregations that need "megachurches."

Already the fastest-growing congregation in the country with more than 30,000 members, Lakewood in its new home will eclipse the 27,000-member Crenshaw Christian Center of Los Angeles as the biggest church in the nation - 16,000 seats versus 10,000 or so at Crenshaw Christian Center's landmark FaithDome.

I don't consider myself a Christian, but whatever happened to community? Whatever happened to knowing your neighbors? Whatever happened to going to your local church and seeing Bob the carpenter and Jane the teacher?

30,000 members? You won't know anyone. You are a number in a religion factory.

Henry Ford would be in awe of the efficiency of these religion factories.

Shuffle the sheep in --> brainwash them weekly --> take their money --> shuffle them out --> repeat

If they are happy there and the leaders are not doing anything but teaching them how to follow a good life then I say more power to them. People who can follow things on blind faith and feel so strongly as to spend large amounts of time, money and energy in such a place are better off beeing taught how to live a clean and just life than listening to others who do not have holy intent.
